David Maul Obituary

David Joyce Maul

Avon-by-the-Sea - David Joyce Maul, 78, of Avon-by-the-Sea, formerly of Elizabeth, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on March 13, 2019.

Dave retired as a Lieutenant in the Elizabeth Police Department after a 37-year career. He proudly served our nation in the US Army National Guard. He was a member of the Belmar Fishing Club where he served as Club President from 2006 to 2017.

Dave was proud of his Irish heritage and was a member of the Thornsticks, which was founded by Mayor Tom Dunn of Elizabeth. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick of Union County and was Master of Ceremony for many of their annual dinners. Dave possessed a brilliant and unique intelligence. Having a great affinity for music, literature and the arts, it was not uncommon to see Dave reading three or four books at the same time. He was passionate about military history and aviation, traveling the world, swimming in the ocean, enjoying a fine meal, and telling a good story. In addition to being an avid supporter of community and sporting events, Dave was instrumental in fundraising for many groups and causes that were important to him.

Dave was predeceased by his parents, John Michael and Hester Joyce Maul. He is survived by his brother, Jack Maul and his wife Alice, of Shallotte, NC, his sister, Mary Hester Troyer and her husband Howard, of Kokomo, Indiana. His nieces and nephews, Michael Maul and his wife Maria, John Maul and his wife Maurine, Mary Capra and her husband Julio, David Troyer and his wife Peggy, Kathleen Hartman and her husband Eric, and Susan Nungester and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his extended family Patricia J. Elmiger, Mary Elmiger, Deirdre Elmiger Hauselt and her husband, Scott, Richard S. Elmiger, Jr. and his wife, Helen, and Patti Elmiger, together with Riley Hauselt, Cole Hauselt and Oona Elmiger.
