(Asbury Park Press)

DAVID MC AULAY
AGE: 78 HIGHLANDS
David McAulay, 78, of Highlands, formerly of Rumson, lost his battle to cancer, surrounded by his family Friday, Oct. 31. David and his late wife lived on the Shrewsbury River in Rumson for 25 years. David moved five years ago to Highlands, where he could enjoy the view of Sandy Hook and the Atlantic Ocean. David loved being on or near the sea. His love of the sea had taken him to training at the U.S. Maritime Training Station in St. Petersburg, Fla. After graduation, he was a merchant marine from 1951-1988. He was a member of the Master Mates & Pilots Union, sailing as a 1st, 2nd or 3rd mate. He traveled all over the world, including American occupied Germany, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. After his retirement, he worked for Interport Pilots in Port Monmouth. He was also a member of the Long Branch Ice Boat & Yacht Club.
David was predeceased by his parents, John and Nora; his wife of 50 years, Amelia, in 2004; and a brother, Bruce. He is survived by a daughter, Kim I. of Long Branch; two sons, Gregg D. of Monmouth Beach, and Glenn R. and his wife Laura of Freehold Township and their children, John, Colin and Julia; two brothers, Lloyd and his wife Mary of New York City, and Joseph of La Crescenta, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Leyla; two sisters, Peg McAulay Byrd and her husband Steve of Madison, and Irene McAulay Varga of North Brunswick; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dennis and Barbara Kiamie of Bluffton, S.C.; many nieces and nephews; and good friend, Gloria Fields.
A memorial gathering will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, with a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to Clean Ocean Action, P.O. Box 505, Highlands, NJ 07732.
