Elmer Stout Obituary

Elmer E. Stout

AGE: 83 • South River

Elmer E. Stout, P.E., 83, formerly of South River, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at West Palm Hospital, West Palm Beach, Florida. Born in South Amboy, he had resided in South River until his retirement from the former Goodkind & O'Dea Consulting Engineers for whom he worked his entire career. He split retirement between Spring Hill Florida and Silver Beach New Jersey. Upon graduating from South River High in 1947, Elmer attended Valley Forge Military Academy, West Point Military Academy and Oklahoma A&M (State) University, where he received a BS in Civil Engineering. He played linebacker at West Point for top-rated Army football teams, where he earned All-American honors (Look Magazine and Associated Press) and was also named AP Lineman of the Week for his stellar performance in an upset victory against Michigan. He played running back and linebacker at OSU, where he was named All Missouri Valley Conference. He was named to the All-American Foundation Football Hall of Fame, and also received the Distinguished American Award from the Bill Denny Chapter of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. On Sept. 28, 1991, South River Mayor Andy Brasno, Jr. proclaimed the day "Elmer Stout Day" in the borough. He was also honored during the day's high school football game ceremony in which his South River football jersey was retired to be joined with other South River gridiron legends. Mr. Stout was a U.S. Army veteran serving as 1st Lieutenant with the Army Corps of Engineers. Elmer was a long time communicant of Corpus Christi R. C. Church in South River, where he coached and officiated CYO sports. He also coached Pop Warner and officiated high school football. He was active for decades with Lions Club International, in which he served as District Governor, District 16D as well as President of the South River Chapter, where he was named Lion of the Year. An avid fisherman, golfer, and coin-collector, Elmer could be easily recognized performing these activities while enjoying his ever-present tobacco pipe.

He is predeceased by his wife, Janet Mark Stout in 2009; his parents, Elmer G. & Charlotte Stout; his sister, Charlotte Elaine Stout and his brother, William Stout. Surviving are his sons, Paul Stout and his wife Barbara of Jupiter, Florida and George Stout of Jackson; his grandchildren, Megan, Douglas and Michael; and his brothers, David Stout of Barnegat and Donald Stout of Middletown.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the Maliszewski Funeral Home, 218 Whitehead Ave., South River. Funeral services will be held 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 from the funeral home, followed by a 9 a.m. mass at Corpus Christi R.C. Church in South River, with burial to follow at Saint Mary's Cemetery, East Brunswick. Letters of condolence may be sent to the family at www.maliszewskifuneralhome.com.
