George J. Ovath, 86, of Hillsborough, N.J. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at his home in Hillsborough. He was surrounded by the love of his family. George was born August 23, 1926 in Scranton, PA. He was raised in Nanticoke, PA and later moved to Manville, NJ. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class and served during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, he then attended and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Miami.

He was a long-time resident of Somerset County. He worked at Camp Kilmer followed by a long career at Lyons V.A. Hospital from where he eventually retired. George lived in Hillsborough where he raised his family. George was a devoted Miami Hurricanes follower and avid New York Yankees fan. He was an animal lover and enjoyed trains, traveling, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Van Pelt and Bob Leifer of Hillsborough and Patricia and Randy Webb of Flemington and their mother Ann Ovath also of Hillsborough. George was a loving grandfather to Jessica Hoover and her husband Joe, Melissa Van Pelt, Michelle Webb, Alyson Webb and her fiancé Matt Healey, and Brian Webb. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Kayla and Brody Hoover.

A funeral service will be Saturday at 10am in the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 US Hwy 206, Hillsborough. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2013 and from 9:30-10am on Saturday August 24, 2013 in the funeral home. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery on Millstone River Road, Hillsborough, N.J.
