Hans Rosen Obituary

Hans Wilhelm Rosen

AGE: 80 • Middletown

Hans Wilhelm Rosen, 80, of Red Bank, NJ, died on September 2, 2013 in Eatontown, NJ. He was born in Arnsberg, Germany and lived most of his life in River Plaza, NJ. Initially trained as a radio mechanic in Germany, Hans left his home at the age of 22 and moved to Midland, Canada in 1955, where he worked at the Leitz camera company. In 1960, he accepted a Wire Mechanic position with the Research & Development department at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, and subsequently worked out of their Holmdel facility, later acquired by AT&T and Lucent Technologies. During his tenure of 38 years at Bell Labs, Hans built circuitry for many leading innovations, including Telstar, the US's first commercial communications satellite and response to Sputnik. For a period, Hans also worked in support of the 1978 Nobel prize-winning team credited for detecting cosmic microwave background radiation as evidence to confirm the Big Bang theory. Before retiring in 1998, Hans worked predominantly with innovations involving fiber optics and HDTV. He was also a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. His kids will remember him best as a shrewd mechanical perfectionist, car enthusiast, and inventor of flashing-light-and-noisemaker toys.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Walli Elsa Damian Rosen, and his two daughters - Carol Diana Hussey and Tiana Carina Rosen, as well as his niece and nephew - Alice Opper and Axel Opper.

Hans was preceded in death by his father Johannes Eduard Rosen, his mother Edelgard Irma Schemm Rosen, and his sister, Ursula Rosen Opper.

A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, September 6th, 2013 from 4 pm to 6 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown, NJ. Funeral services are scheduled for 5:30 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations instead be made to your local animal shelter, as he was particularly fond of his "granddogs" Lucky & Amos.
