AGE: 77 •
Hervé Filion, 77, the Legendary Harness Racing driver passed away on June 22nd. A viewing will be held Wednesday, June 28th from 2-7 PM at the Freeman Funeral Home, 47 East Main Street, Freehold followed by a procession to the Freehold Raceway for a final lap around the racetrack at 7:15 PM. I remember listening to races on the radio from Brandywine Racetrack when I was a kid and hearing the many races that he won. Then when I was older ended up working there. In addition to being the greatest rider, he was humble and kind to even lowly young men just starting out.

Now that you are gone, there is only one thing left to say. Simply put, you were the greatest of all time. I'm sure on your final lap around the track you were parked first over and you went by the leader anyway. The same as you did 15 thousand times before. Anyone who ever saw you drive will never forget. I know I won't. Now that you're in heaven, when you pull first over God will be just a little nervous on the front end. After all, he's only God but you are the mighty Filion.

Your father was a great driver and a great man. He drove for us for many years. He was special with the 2YO babies never abusing them, just teaching them to be good racehorses.Whenever the kids were with us in the winners circle he always put them in the bike for the pictures. When they were not there, he always asked about them. When I told my son now 35 about his passing he said he just told someone the other day about Herve flying into the infield of Freehold raceway, in a helicopter to race for the day. We will always have fond memories of your father.

My deepest sympathy to the Filion family and the entire harness racing industry. Herve was the greatest....a legend in his own time....and the "Babe Ruth" of harness racing. Innumerable loving fans would flock to the track to watch him drive. He could do it all and will never be forgotten.

I grew up working with the horses when I was young with Bill Bresnahan,Mike Fagarone, Jim Vitale and many more. Those were the best days and now I work at the track itself. Herve will always be known for parking his helicopter on the infield at the track and one of the best drivers there was.

Herve Filion was the ambassador and face of harness racing for so many years. His amazing talent and great achievements will never be forgotten. He was a dedicated professional who was always there to promote and give back to the industry he truly loved. Looked up to by his fellow horsemen and fans alike, we could never repay this great man for helping to put harness racing on the map. He will always be remembered for his wonderful personality, wit, kindness and generosity. There will never be another Herve Filion, he was unique and will always be remembered as a true champion!
