Iris Potis Obituary

Iris M. Potis

AGE: 84 • Freehold

Iris M. Potis, 84, of Freehold, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2015, in Freehold. Iris was born in New Jersey but she was raised and educated near Glasgow, Scotland. During World War II, bombs were often dropped at her doorstep and the shipyards of Glasgow.

She was always optimistic and happy. Iris returned to the United States on the Queen Mary as a young woman and she eventually met the love of her life, the late Kenneth A. Potis of Belleville, NJ. Iris' parents and brothers would also follow her from Scotland to the United States and she welcomed them all. An "Open House" and an "Open Heart" to all.

Iris loved children and she loved people of all ages and all backgrounds. She brought joy, encouragement, hope, patience and a smile to everyone she met.

She was, as her late father, James Simpson would say, "The Greatest Daughter, The Greatest Mother and the Greatest Grandmother, that God ever put breath in."

Iris was the first female Bank Officer and loan officer with Broad National Bank in Newark, NJ, then located across the street from City Hall. In more recent years, Iris happily worked side by side with her son, Ken, at his law office in Manalapan, NJ.

Iris Potis is predeceased by her husband, Kenneth A. Potis; her parents, James and Thomasina Simpson; her mother-in-law, Charlotte Potis; her sister, Betty Woolsey; her brother, Bobby Simpson; her stepson, Gordon Potis; her niece, Christina Vaneau; and her dear friend, Ann Gattuso. Iris is survived by her son, Ken Potis and his wife, Patti; her daughter, Beverly Walsh and her husband, Bill; her stepson, David Brennan and his wife, Jeanie and their family; and her grandchildren, Kenny Potis and Katie Potis, David Boncic and his wife, Jenn, Sarah Walsh, Charlotte Houser and her husband, Josh, Rachel Walsh, and Kevin Potis and Frank Potis and their families. She is also survived by her brothers, Jim Simpson and Tom Simpson, and sisters-in-law, Ida, Barbara and Audrey Simpson. She adored nieces, Barbara Esensee and Kelly Cardinal and friends, Frani Fernandez and Sue Harris like loving daughters. Lastly, Iris is survived by her beloved great-grandchildren, Daniella, Mason, Madelynn, Sam and John Patrick, as well as, many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Iris will be loved forever and she leaves us all with kindness, a smile and her comforting thought that:

"Everything will be alright."

A private service was held on July 7, 2015 at Old Tennent Church Cemetery in Manalapan, on the 27th Anniversary of the passing of Kenneth A. Potis, the love of Iris' life. They are now peacefully reunited. Those wishing to share any memories or condolences with her family are welcomed to contact the family at [email protected].

I am still passing along your wise words and expressions to my children and my new young friends and thinking of you with every word. As my daughter prepares for her wedding its me sitting where you sat over 30 years ago watching the fashion show of wedding dresses and wishing you were sitting next to me.

You were more than a mother to me you were my best friend. I miss you everyday, I miss talking to you, I miss your voice, I miss shopping with you, nobody could ever replace you in my life.
Trying to end on a positive note but its difficult.
God bless your family Ken & Beverly

Iris was a second grandma to my children. She was known to us as "Grandma Iris" even though we weren't exactly related! I remember her being interested in helping people get ahead in the world or just cope with difficulty. She was also fearless. Not too much daunted her. Her family and her memories of growing up in Scotland was precious to her. She will be missed but not forgotten. Her laughter, twinkling eyes and Scottish accent still ring in my ears. Rest in peace Iris.

Iris and I met when I began my first job after high school. She was my mentor, but we quickly became good friends. Our first of many shopping outings was to pick out my wedding gown. She taught me so many things from where to shop for shoes (L&T have the best) to her must famous advice, what's for you won't go past you;" which my children will tell you is now my line. Our favorite place to go together was the Freehold Race Track for the simulcasting. Our bets were small but the fun we had was priceless! She was there for me my entire adult life through all the milestones and tribulations she became a second mother to me.
My career advanced from that first job 31 years ago, but I could never have imagined that I would leave there with one of the most treasured and valued friendships I could ever have.
Iris, I love you and miss you dearly!! As you would say, We are only passing through. Until we meet again, my friend, I hold you in my heart.
