James Bruce Obituary
Waretown
James Bruce of Whiting, formerly of East Brunswick, passed away Friday, December 7 at the Pines in Whiting. Born in Sayreville, he lived most of his life in South River and East Brunswick. Jim worked at Jersey Central Power & Light of Sayreville as a shift foreman from age 18 to 62. During WWII, he enlisted in the Navy as a member of the See Bees.
Jim loved baseball, both to watch and to play. He and his wife, "Hockey" loved the NY Yankees and took every opportunity to enjoy their games. Jim, in his younger years, played baseball as a lefty First baseman in three local semi-pro leagues: South River Athletic Assn., St. Mary's, and East Brunswick Sporting Club. He returned to baseball at age 70 and played in the Middlesex County Senior League, helping his team one year to win a championship.
Jim was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, South River, for 75 years. As a devout Christian, he served as a trustee and Deacon as well as a bus driver and 7th grade Sunday School teacher. A humble man with a good sense of humor, his "Jim jokes" were definitely his trademark.
Jim was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years Helen; his daughter Judith Lynn Beaton; his brothers, John and Andrew Bruce; his parents, Enphemia and William Bruce. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Conover and son-in-law, John Conover of Waretown; his grandchildren Dawn Velarde and husband Andrew of Vienna, VA; Daniel James & Douglas Bruce Conover of Honolulu, HI; Ernest "Chip" Beaton and wife Theresa of Atlanta, GA; Matthew Beaton of Louisiana and Jonathan Beaton of Fernadina Beach, FL. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews: Sylvia Kaldor of Grasonville, MD; Linda Jean Bruce of Canandaigua, NY; Andrew Bruce, Jr., of Lakeland, FL; and John Bruce, Jr., of Port St. Lucie, FL.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road in East Brunswick. Burial will be at the Washington Monumental Cemetery in South River.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, December 11, 2012 from 12:00 to 2 p.m. at Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 130 Main Street, South River NJ 08882

Barbara and family,
Your father (grandfather) was truly blessed with a full and long life, overflowing with family love and moral commitment. His personal integrity and "straight up" values will continue to serve as an inspiration for generations of family members and friends. This world was blessed to have had James Bruce walk among us. Heaven is now blessed in welcoming James back into Helen's arms. May their joined souls rest in eternal peace.
