James J. Hamill

AGE: 78 • Colts Neck

James J. Hamill, 78, of Colts Neck passed away on Friday, February 5th, 2016. James was raised in Denville, NJ and moved to Rockaway before settling in Colts Neck.

James was the President of Morris Hills High School's Class of 1956, and he went on to serve in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1965 as a Tank Commander. Upon his return, he began working for S. J. Groves Heavy Construction. In the late 1970's, James was sought out by international leaders, including the Vice President of the US, to travel to Africa and the Caribbean and consult on heavy construction projects. In 1981, he began working for Schiavone Construction and served as the company's executive vice president, until his retirement in 2012. He was a 50-year member of Local 852 Operating Engineers and was the co-founder of Rockaway Township Youth Hockey. James loved fishing, hunting, gardening, woodworking, the outdoors, and he could fix just about anything. He was devoted to his family and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

James was predeceased by his parents Archie Hamill and Caroline Rose Gantert, and his son Michael Hamill. Surviving is his wife Frances Rose Hamill, his children James Hamill and Tammy, Long Valley, Lisa Gideon and Stan, Rockaway, Robert Hamill and Lisa, Mt. Arlington, Lori Lesch and Jerry, Rockaway, and their mother Joanne Hamill, Cynthia DePolo and Daniel, Point Pleasant Beach, Louis Bertone and Jill, Colts Neck, 17 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 PM until the time of the Service at 8 PM Monday, February 8th at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ 07733. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Research Treatment Fund at crt.org.
