Jan Rushforth Obituary

Jan Marie Rushforth

AGE: 62 • Bryn Mawr, PA

Jan Marie Rushforth, a passionate crusader for the environment, world peace, gender equality and rights of the disabled, died peacefully in her Bryn Mawr home on July 29, 2017 following a courageous struggle with cancer. She was 62.

Born Oct. 26, 1954 in Ridgewood, NJ, Janice Marie Husing grew up in Allendale and Deal, and graduated from Asbury Park High School, Class of '72. She was among the first class to include women at Rutgers College (now Rutgers University), graduating in 1976.

Jan Marie earned a Master's degree in Counseling Education from Texas Tech University in 1978. She worked for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society from 1978-1987.

Jan Marie initiated the Lansdowne Tree Planting Program and organized Earth Day ceremonies in Philadelphia, she served on the township's Environmental Advisory Committee and was also active in the Darby Creek Valley Association. In addition to her local and national environmental activism, Jan Marie sought on the global stage to work for a better governed world with the World Federalist Association where she organized and led events to promote world peace, a stronger United Nations, an effective International Criminal Court, human rights, gender equality and more. She chaired the organization's Philadelphia Chapter and served as the vice-chair of its national executive committee. In her professional life Jan Marie helped manage and expand the family's business holdings, including Rushforth Solar, LLC, Rushforth Engineering and Delta Group Holdings.

Jan Marie will be remembered by her family and many friends as upbeat, passionate, positive and giving, and supportive friend who signed most all her emails "Hugs, Jan." She endeavored to "be good, do good, leave the world a little better, bring a smile, be fair, honest and kind."

Jan Marie is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, Alan Rushforth, her siblings Margaret Husing Katz (Rick), Diane Noumair Belloit (Nick), Mark Noumair (Patty), Eddie Noumair (Pam), her mother-in-law Alice Rushforth and several adoring nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Helen (nee Delafield) and Martin E. Husing, stepfather Edward Noumair and father-in-law, A. Hubert Rushforth.

Dear Alan, out of the blue I was thinking of Jan and started reviewing our emails over the years. Such a woman of action and joy was revealed as we went back and forth, from our World Federalist Association meetings, Darby Creek and other environmental activities, prayer requests, or interfaith and Native American wisdom shares. I saved so many that were worthy of remembrance. Instead of immediately reaching out to renew correspondence, I went to Facebook... and found her obituary. My breath was taken away. I listened to her video. And reviewed more emails, I contacted a mutual acquaintence. I said a prayer. I joined CCL. I wanted you to know I have recited prayers to lift her wings as she continues to ascend and transcend. May you find her peace around you.

Jan was such a good person. It was so nice to see her when she came to the democratic meeting at our house a few weeks ago in May.

We will miss her so much.
