JOHN WOODROW CHAPPLE

SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS
John Woodrow Chapple, 91, of Spring Lake Heights, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, at Meridian Sub Acute Rehabilitation, Wall. Mr. Chapple was an officer for Prentice Hall Publishing in New York City before retiring in 1980. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II from 1941-1944 in Burma. He was a graduate of City College of New York in Manhattan, where he earned a BS in Business. Mr. Chapple was a communicant of St. Catharine's Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake, where he was an usher for the 9 a.m. Mass. He was a member of the Fairway Mews Country Club, Spring Lake Heights, a member of the Men's 18 hole Group at Fairway Mews and helped to organize the annual golf outing benefitting the Spring Lake First Aid Squad. He was a former scout master for the Boy Scouts of America in New York and was an avid bridge player. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he lived in Manhattan for many years before moving to Spring Lake Heights in 1980.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Moynihan Chapple, in 1991. Surviving are his second wifem Elizabeth Starr Chapple of 14 years; son, Daniel Chapple of Marco Island, Fla., and Kenneth Chapple and his wife Lea of Trumbull, Conn.; stepchildren, Christine Fetzer and her husband Don of Sea Girt, Patricia Starr of Manasquan, and Thomas Starr and his wife Sharon of Durham, Conn.; sister, Marie Richter of Port Jefferson Station, Long Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Patrick Chapple and his wife Nicole, Jennifer Cusimano and her husband Steve, Kelly Chapple and her fiancé Ryan Stone, and Christopher Chapple; a great-granddaughter, Isabelle Grace; and nine step grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Brandon, Derrick and Timothy Fetzer, Ryan and Spencer Arnold, and John and Leah Starr.
Visiting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12 at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13 at St. Catharine's R.C. Church, Spring Lake. Burial will be at St. Anne's Cemetery, Wall.
