John S. Smatusik, Jr.

AGE: 84 • Jackson

John S. Smatusik, Jr., 84, of Jackson Twp., NJ passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Laurelton Village Care Center in Brick Twp., NJ. John was born in Jackson Twp. and was a life-long resident. Mr. Smatusik was the Superintendent of Public Works for Jackson Twp. for 30 years, retiring in 1996. Mr. Smatusik proudly served his country during World War II with the United States Army, receiving the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. John was very active within Jackson and outside the Township as well. He was a charter member and member of the Board of Fire Commissioners for Jackson Mills Vol. Fire Co. (Station 54); a charter member of the Jackson Rotary Club, a Jackson Twp. Committeeman, serving in 1959, 1960 & 1961, a member of the Democratic Club of Jackson, a member of the Jackson Twp. V.F.W. Post 4703; a member of the Jackson Twp. Historical Commission; a member of the Jackson Twp. Alumni Hall of Fame; honorary member of the Jackson Twp. First Aid Squad; former President of the Jackson Little League; a Democratic County Committeeman for 40 years and past member of the Jackson Twp. Planning Board.

John was predeceased by his parents, John S. Smatusik, Sr. & Magdalen Smatusik. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florence Smatusik; his daughters & son-in-law, Karen & Sam DePasquale and Barbara Garigule all of Jackson Twp., NJ; his son & daughter-in-law, John S. Smatusik, III & Jen Smatusik of Jackson Twp., NJ; his grandchildren; Ken, Kim, Missy, Jennifer and Brian; and by his great-grandchildren, Carrie, William and Lillian.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 from 4-8 PM at THE GEORGE S. HASSLER FUNERAL HOME, 980 Bennetts Mills Road, Jackson Twp., NJ. A funeral gathering will be offered on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 8:15 AM at the funeral home. His Funeral Ceremony will follow at 9:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow in The Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Rd., Arneytown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the memory of John to the Jackson Helping Hands Foundation, 104 Harvey Jones Dr., Jackson Twp., NJ 08527, and would greatly be appreciated. To the Smatusik and DePasquale famiies:

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I remember John from when I was a child. He was always a caring person. When I was in high school for student government day I was able to spend the entire work day with him.

Whenever I pass your house in Jackson, I always remember the good times I had. John was a very important person to the town of Jackson and I will always think of him with fond memories.

Tears fill my eyes this morning as I find out the passing of one of my fathers(Dave Miller)closest friend, John. I am so deeply sorry for the loss of John. He was an amazing and sweet man. My thoughts and prayers are with Florence and all the family at this most difficult time. My parents Dave and Marie loved John and Florence deeply.

I HAVE HAD THE HONOR OF KNOWING JOHN AND FLORENCE AS I USE TO WORK AT LAURELTON VILLAGE. THE MINUTE I MEET THIS COUPLE I THOUGHT HOW ADORABLE, JOHN ALWAYS THE GENTLEMAN, I WAS THERE FOR THEIR RENEWAL OF THEIR VOWS.WHAT A LOVE STORY, WHEN I HEARD THE NEWS I STOPPED BY TO SEE FLO, TO SHOW HER MY WEDDING PICTURES SINCE I HAD JUST BEEN MARRIED THE WEEK BEFORE. I GAVE HER A BIG HUG AND KISS EXPRESSING MY SORROW TO HER, SHE SAYS TO ME I DONT KNOW WHAT I'M GOING TO DO WITHOUT HIM... AFTER 64 YRS OF MARRIAGE HOW DO YOU? I TOLD HER SHE HAS HER FAMILY AND HER FRIENDS AND OF COURSE ME. I TOLD HER I'LL BE BACK TO VISIT WHENEVER I CAN, IN MY FIELD OF WORK ITS HARD NOT TO CONNECT WITH THE RESIDENTS, AND I DID WITH JOHN AND FLORENCE. WHENEVER I SAW JOHN HE WOULD BLOW ME A KISS.
