John Sweeney Obituary
AGE: 97 • Manalapan
John V. Sweeney, 97, of Manalapan Township, died at CentraState Medical Center on Sunday, January 8, 2017. Born in Sligo, Ireland he has resided in New York City before moving to Manalapan 40 years ago. Prior to his retirement, he was a marine engineer for the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, United States Navy, and for John J. McMullen Naval Architects, Florham Park. John served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a congregant of St. Thomas More R.C. Church, Manalapan.
John was predeceased by his four brothers Edward, Francis, Bernard and Thomas and two sisters, Mary Anne and Catherine. He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Dorothy; his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Dianne; granddaughter, AnneMarie and her husband Ron Poll; grandson, Greg and his wife Jill; 7 great grandchildren, Emily, Sean, Kate, Jack, Connor, Jena and Liam; two sisters, Margaret Sweeney and June Fitzgerald and his brother Donald Sweeney and wife Geri; his sister-in-law, Ann Sweeney and many additional loving family members.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Tuesday, January 10th from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 pm and Wednesday, from 3 to 5 pm at the Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, 344 Route 9 North, Manalapan. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 am on Thursday at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, Manalapan. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings on the Hudson, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Thomas More Church, 186 Gordons Corner Road, Manalapan or Friends of Good Shepherd School, 954 Lexington Avenue #252, New York, New York 10021-5013. He was Big John and I was always Little John was huge role model in my effectively fatherless life. He taught me a lot about life, being a husband, and being humble. Some of his lessons I even learned a little.

Peter and family, we send our condolences from afar, and want you to know that we had always cherished the times that we had with Big John. We can't remember exactly when "Little John" introduced us, but it was many years ago. We especially appreciated Big John's singing at Evlynn's party, and also a time of breakfast with he and Mama Ditty (?sp?) not too many years ago at a local diner near Kendall Park. When hearing of Big John's exploits over the years from either John or Ev, it always brought a smile to our faces. May he rest in peace.
