Joseph Small Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Small

AGE: 74 • Atlantic Highlands

Joseph "Joe" Small, 74, of Atlantic Highlands, NJ passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family and a team of angels from Care Alternatives for whom we are forever grateful for their support. Joe was born October 27, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York and spent his childhood days in Malverne and Maspeth, NY. Joe graduated from the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School and met the love of his life, Linda Lyons Small while stationed at the United States Air Force Radar Defense Base in Highlands, NJ. Along with his wife Linda, they raised their family in Atlantic Highlands for the last 54 years. Joe was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Agnes RC Church in Atlantic Highlands. He was the family's spiritual rock blessed with great faith and belief in the power of prayer.

After a short stint of delivering beer on the Jersey shore, Joe worked his way up the corporate ladder starting at Chemical Bank in 1961 where he held senior management positions and then many years as Senior Vice President at JP Morgan Chase. He finally retired after working and commuting for 40 plus years to Brooklyn and Staten Island and then dabbled as a realtor before going back to work again over the past several years for Sovereign Bank. He was hard working, trustworthy, loyal and greatly respected by his colleagues as well as a great friend and advisor to many small and mid-size companies. Joe was very active throughout his career in the Brooklyn and Staten Island Chambers of Commerce as well as the Boy Scouts of America, Catholic Charities and St. Joseph's College.

Joe was a devoted and amazing husband, father, pop-pop and friend. Everyone loved Joe as he always had a smile on his face, a story or joke to tell and strong values and views that he expressed to anyone who would listen. He never met a person he couldn't talk to and make them feel like they were best friends. He could be found many a day walking in the Atlantic Highlands harbor, enjoying the view of the water and a good book from his porch, never missing an opportunity for a golf outing and his family will be eternally grateful for Joe's photography interest capturing memories that will last forever.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Viola Anderson Small; his in-laws, Thomas and Marguerite Lyons and his step sisters, Joan Leigh and Florence Jarvis. He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda; his son, Bob and wife Abbie of Locust; daughter, Donna and her husband Michael Majoros of Wyckoff; daughter, Alyson and her husband Michael Denzler of Atlantic Highlands and his son, Matthew and his wife Bethany of Southport, NC. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Rob, Chris and Lizzie Small, Victoria and Michael Majoros and Makenzie and Kathryn Denzler, along with loving in-laws, nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Our hearts are broken with his loss and he surely will be missed by all whose life was touched by him.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 14th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm at Posten's Funeral Home, 59 East Lincoln Avenue, Atlantic Highlands. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 15th, 11am at St. Agnes RC Church in Atlantic Highlands. Entombment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Dearest Linda There are no words to truly express how sad I am to know your beloved Joe is no longer with us. I had the pleasure of meeting Joe at Chemical Bank, then lucky me I became his secretary and friend. I knew this union was forever when one day this giant of a man walks in from the rain with a tiny snoopy umbrella over his head, it was in Gods plan that we meet for he brought so much joy into my life by then bringing me home to meet his beautiful family ..I then knew where Joe got his glow from..I too fell in love with his family he so adored..and I have been blessed to share in this love for almost 40 years! I am honored to have been part of the "Small" family, we have shared so much joy but also I don't know how I would have made it thru the birth of my first child Michael, born with a disability, Joe my knight in shining armour and his family gave me the support and love my husband and I needed so much. Thank you my Joe Cool for lighting up my life with your smile your love your generous heart and most of all the honor to be Godmother to your daughter Alyson and the closeness I will always treasure with your beloved family...we will miss you so dearest Joe. With broken hearts Marie Michael & family

Aunt Linda, Bobby, Donna, Alyson, and Matthew, you all were blessed, honored, and loved by a husband, father, friend, and gentleman of the highest caliber and integrity. As a kid, Uncle Joe, I always admired you for the generosity of your heart, and the impeccable appearance you always maintained. You were always full of a quip or a word and you saw the very best in everyone you met. Thank you!

Dear Linda and Family. We are so sad to read of the passing of Joe. He was a realtor for both my husband and myself as well as my sister. While we searched for homes, we felt that Joe was like a father to us. Always giving us advice and taking care of our interest as if we were his children. We heard wonderful stories about you, his children, and his grandchildren. What a very special man, whom we always thought of as a father figure not out realtor. It is with great sadness that we send our heartfelt sympathy to you and your family.

Linda and Family: We have not been in contact since grade school at OLPH class of 1961.Please accept my sympathy on the loss of Joe. I did not know him but his obituary is a fitting tribute to an obviously wonderful person. I am a cancer survivor and know the heartbreak it causes when it takes someone close to us from us.They are all taken way too soon. May you find strength in your faith and your family at this difficult time. In Peace.
