June Steinmark committed close to 1,000 volunteer hours ANNUALLY to the Historic Village at Allaire. She organized and made some assemblance out of the Village library in the late 80's. She catalogued part of the museum's collection in the early 1990s, and then from 1991 to 1994 when the village could no longer afford to pay a General Store Manager due to a State-wide depression, she started to manage the Store. She inherited an enormousness amounts of stock to sell, a daunting task. Every nook, closet, and hidden space was searched out for merchandise. June found it, with the Store clerk's help, but she POURED the next three years into cleaning up THE Store, selling off (at a profit) what merchandise she could - some Midwestern haggling included along with her former retail background. She successfully kept this Building open and running , as it was a visitor's favorite.
To that end I consider June my first real boss. She gave me my marching orders for the day, gave me independence with them, but wanted to see the end product. In general, we agreed on things, disagreed on other things. But most importantly we respected each other tremendously. She knew I was a young buck and I needed to see things fail myself. Because of June the Store didn't close like so many other businesses in NJ at that time. She kept the lights on. In 1993 the village finally climbed out of the hole it was in and I took over the Store adopting many of June's retail principles. I was given one clerk to help me. In 1994 June was named Volunteer of the Year and recognized for her years of service. Even in 1994 she logged close to 1,000 hours as she joined the Allaire Village Auxiliary. In 1996 my Mom, Linda Morton Sitkus, called and and asked if she would come back to the Store to help out as a clerk. But there was one condition, she was to come back this time as a paid employee. She graciously
agreed, after some severe begging. She comtinually visited the Store after even retiring as a clerk in 2001. She then was full time volunteer with the Allaire Village Auxiliary. June talked fondly of her family.
June was an absolute jewel who was one of a kind and brought a smile and some spark to your day. She spoke fondly of her heritage, her husband, daughter and grandchildren. She will surely be missed. Hance M. Sitkus, CPA - Chairman of the Board Allaire Village Inc.
