Lars Wikman Obituary

Lars Gregory Wikman

AGE: 49 • Middletown

Lars Gregory Wikman, 49, of Middletown, passed away peacefully at home Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, after a hard fought battle with cancer. He lived his early years in Monmouth Hills. He so loved Monmouth Hills that he had his wedding and reception held there when he married Julie White on Aug. 25, 2012. An actor and photographer, he was very much loved by all family members especially young ones. Peace, love, and joy was his philosophy and he was known by all for his kindness, giving spirit, his love of music, nature, gardening and his pets. Lars loved playing frisbee golf with his friends. He was a die-hard Mets and Giants fan recording and watching every game. Lars' abundant passion for life was surpassed only by his love for others. Lars was a wise and deeply spiritual man seeking justice and equal treatment for all this world's sentient beings. He believed that all creatures are above no other and below no other. Lars always remained true to himself and did not compromise his beliefs and values.

Lars was predeceased by step-father, William C. Johnson, step-brothers, Kirk & Billy Johnson. Lars was survived by his loving wife, Julie Wikman; his dog, Ruthie, and his cats, Leela and Loki; his mother, Audrey Wikman Johnson of Middletown; his father, Allan Wikman of Kingston, NY; siblings, Lisa Woodfield of Chatham, MA, Chris Wikman (Jane Wikman) of Germantown, MD, Eric Wikman (Jennifer Craker) of Los Angeles, CA; step-brother, Glen Chris Johnson of Navesink, NJ, and his partner, Patty Watson, step-brother's widow Kathleen Johnson; nieces and nephews: Bill (Joselyn) Havens, Margarete (Tim) Brenner, Emily (Bryan) Greehagen, Andrew Havens, Max Woodfield, Sarah Wikman, David Wikman, Sean Wikman, William Johnson, and Colin Johnson; his in-laws, Mark and AnneMarie White of Wall, his brother-in-laws: Jon White, his wife Kelly and their son, Tommy, of Wall, Dan White of Brielle, and his fiance, Kerry Baglivio, and sister-in-law, Corina White of Highland Park.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to the memorial celebration at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, with words of remembrance at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Lars' name to The Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606 or online at www.nature.org.

I knew Lars when he moved to Fair Haven - 6th grade? Through part of High School. Good times, bad times. We listened to a lot of good old Rock n Roll music, loudly. I remember one bus trip to NY where Lars had a boombox along - and we were the only ones that could play music when we went through the tunnel - as all the other kids only had radios. Lars had a cool jacket that I think his brother Chris air brushed / painted - it was a sheep-lined jean jacket - and on the back was the owl from the album cover 'Fly by night' by Rush. He wore that jacket everywhere. We spent a lot of time hanging out at the local arcade, the Whistle Stop - and spent all our money. I was sad to discover this obituary - I had no idea - the last time I saw Lars was when he lived in Red Bank - some point in the late 80s. Glad to see that he found someone and it looks like he had his act together. Sorry that he's gone. That's Lars in the center of the photo - taken at the Whistle Stop - he's the kid with the blonde hair in the middle, beneath all the peace signs.

There are some people who, though we may never get to know them particularly well or stay in touch with them, leave their mark on us. Lars was one of those special few. I did a show with him many years ago and never forgot his kindness, talent and sense of humor. My condolences to all who loved him during this time of heartache and sorrow...may there be some small comfort in the fact that he will be remembered well by so many, even those of us who only shared a brief time with him.
