Leo H. Carney

AGE: 65 • Middletown

Leo H. Carney, 65, of Middletown passed away Friday, May 25th, at Monmouth Medical Center. Leo was born in Newark, the son of the late Leo S. and Estelle Carney. He was a member of The First Baptist Church of Red Bank. Leo has lived at and written about the New Jersey Shore for more than 35 years. After leaving the staff of The Star-Ledger, he went on to contribute some 700 freelance articles to The Sunday New York Times (1979-2005) and was named that paper's first environment and conservation writer for New Jersey. He was the originator of The Times' first weekly column on the environment and conservation as well as the recipient of two first place awards, "For Journalistic Excellence," from the state chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Leo's long-standing passion for American history dates to his days at Franklin Pierce University. In recent years his profile on the town of Atlantic Highlands has appeared in New Jersey Monthly magazine, followed by several broader and extensively researched articles in that publication. Leo also co-authored HOPE FOR DEAD END KIDS with Dave Bailley

Leo is survived by his wife of 12 years, Margie Carney. He is also survived by three sisters, Denise andher husband Rick Quinter of Brick., Colleen Ocello of Brick., Doreen Carney of Toms River, and four nephews Mike and Brad Baylog, Joe (J.J.) and Jordan Ocello.

Leo and I were on the editorial staff of the "Franklin Pierce Arrow" 1966-1968. I often wanted to look him up and chat over old times but never got around to it... Turns out I've been reading his work for years and didn't know it... R.I.P. old friend, give my regards to Ralph Bose...
