Sr. Margaret Maureen Hoffman, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, 92, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ. Sr. Margaret Maureen was born in Weehawken, NJ the daughter of Charles and Mary (Gleason) Hoffman. She entered the Sisters of Charity on March 25, 1934 and was a member for 75 years. Sr. Margaret Maureen was an educator in New Jersey and Florida. She taught at St. Michael's School, Union City, NJ 1935 to 1939. Sr. Margaret Maureen served as an Elementary teacher at St. Joseph School, Pensacola, FL from 1939 to 1954; Teacher and Principal for Elementary and H.S. from 1954 to 1957 and Principal and H.S. Counselor from 1957 to 1966. She then returned to New Jersey where she served as Principal at St. Mary H.S., Jersey City from 1966 to 1969. Sr. Margaret served as Guidance Counselor and Director at East Orange Catholic H.S., East Orange from 1969 to 1980. At St. Mary Parish Dumont, she served as Associate Director of Religious Studies from 1980 to 1987; as Director of Religious Education from 1987 to 1991 and as Parish Catechetical Leader from 1991 to 1998. Sr. Margaret Maureen served as Administrator at Mother Seton Residence, Montclair, NJ from 1998 to 2001 and part-time ministry to the elderly from 2001 to 2008. In 2008 she moved to Saint Anne Villa where she resided until her death. Sr. Margaret Maureen received her B.S. in Education from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ and a M.A. in English from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Renee Hoffman, St. Petersburg, FL. and Miriam Hoffman, Denville, NJ; several nieces and nephews and several grandnieces and a grandnephew.
The wake for Sr. Margaret Maureen Hoffman will be held in Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ from 2:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be on Thursday, October 15, 2009 in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station, NJ at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions be made to the Sisters of Charity Development Fund, P.O. Box 476, Convent Station, NJ, 07961-0476. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dangler Funeral Home, Summit, NJ.
