Martha Serviente Obituary

(Asbury Park Press)

MARTHA E. SERVIENTE
CARLISLE, PA
Marti Serviente, of Carlisle, Pa., peacefully died at home on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009. She was on the verge of proving that perpetual motion is possible. She raised 5 kids, worked, danced, sang, and dispensed joy (often simultaneously) for most of her life. She earned the sobriquet "Flower Power" from an admiring choir director who was impressed with her choice of tie-dyed clothes and beads: this when she was well into her 70's. She relished the macro and the micro. The Great Wall of China or an ice cream sundae was appreciated with equal gusto. She was kind to spiders, squirrels and birds as well as her mammalian family members. Anger and sadness were treated as delicate belongings; only brought out on rare occasion, and briefly at that. She walked fast, talked fast and ate slowly. White wine with ice was always a welcome companion and she was never to be found without at least 3 packets of artificial sweetener and 7 tissues on her person, just in case of emergencies. Her choice topics were the latest doings of her grandkids, kids, and what she might have just enjoyed watching on Charlie Rose, or listening to on "Piano Jazz" or "From the Top". She was eclectic before it was popular, and retained her country "down home" roots when it was not. Marti did not particularly care how the world judged her, but she liked to feel pretty. In word, deed and leopard print she expressed herself with a contagious enthusiasm and youthful energy that was not tied to chronological age. She packed more love, humor, kindness, curiosity and energy into her small frame and 92 years than may have been allowable by law. A few years ago, she adopted the mantra "How lucky can I get!" Those whose lives had the good fortune to bump against hers are still saying the same. If so moved, make a donation in her honor to a charity of your choice.
