Nancy Dunphey Obituary

Nancy Bottomley Dunphey

Manahawkin - Nancy Bottomley Dunphey of Manahawkin, NJ died peacefully in her home on May 30, 2019.

Nancy, who was one of seven children, was born on October 31, 1927 in Camden, New Jersey, to Constance Sharpe Bottomley and Gordon F. Bottomley. She was raised in Merchantville, NJ and her family spent their summers in Island Heights, NJ. When Nancy was in seventh grade, she met Richard Dunphey and while they both attended the same high school and were voted class couple, they moved in different directions for several years. Nancy graduated from Goucher College in 1945, with a degree in English and taught elementary school in Baltimore, MD. In 1951, she married her best friend and high school sweetheart, Richard, and they remained together until his death in 2014. Nancy and Richard began their married life in Merchantville, and Nancy continued to teach school in Magnolia, NJ until they started their family and moved to Long Beach Island. Nancy said there were never any happier days then when she and Richard were raising their five active children along the coast line with the gulls, sand, and sea as the children's playground. She and Richard enjoyed traveling and Nancy especially loved her trips to England to visit the homeland of her parents. An avid and active sportswoman; she loved swimming, tennis, and was a late convert to the game of golf. She was a devout Phillies fan and she loved listening to the games on the radio.

After raising her family, Nancy embarked on a new career in real estate and worked for 35 happy years at Ager Realty in Brant Beach, retiring at 90. She was an active member of the Ocean Reformed Church in Manahawkin. Her "can-do" attitude and indomitable spirit were an inspiration and she was a true friend to all who knew her.

Nancy is survived by her four children, Richard (Patricia) Dunphey of Manahawkin, NJ, Scott (Rose) Dunphey of Monument, Colorado, daughter-in-law, Vasanthi Dunphey of Freehold, NJ, Leslie Dunphey Ades of San Rafael, California, Lisa (James) Wardle of Toms River, NJ, fourteen grandchildren who affectionately called her "Gagi", and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son William Dunphey. In addition, she is survived by two brothers, Donald Bottomley of Island Heights, NJ and William Bottomley of Chapel Hill, NC, and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 10:00am at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, 333 N. Main St., Manahawkin, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, Nancy has requested that donations can be made to Wounded Warriors.
