Paul A. McDonough Jr.,

AGE: 59 • Manhattan,NY

Paul A. McDonough Jr., 59, of Manhattan was born August 2, 1954 and died December 12, 2013. Visitation will be held from 2 pm to 7 pm Tuesday at the private home of the Andrus Family at 3 Tillou Court, South Orange, NJ. Arrangements are by the McDonough Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Newark at 10:30 am on Wednesday followed by burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Paul was born and raised in Newark to Paul and Josephine Finneran "JoJo" McDonough. He graduated from Seton Hall Prep in 1972 and from Seton Hall University in 1976. Paul was on the swim team at Seton Hall Prep for four years, he was a black belt in karate, and literary editor of his college newspaper. He entered his parent's business, the McDonough Funeral Home in Newark and Belmar, and was employed until 2005 when he retired. Paul worked with his partner, Luke McDonough for years at St. Paul the Apostle Church in NYC, cooking for the homeless during the winters. Paul was an avid reader, Theater Goer and gardner. In the summers, he was a gardner for the West 55th Street Gardening Association. He was a lover of all types of music from acid rock to classical music. Paul loved Summering in Maine and he loved to drive and made 13 cross country trips exploring America. He participated in the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh and received the Golden Broom Award for beautifying Newark. Paul loved animals and supported throughout his life the ASPCA and during his life adopted multiple homeless dogs.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, Paul A. and Josephine McDonough and a sister, Kathleen McDonough Benz. He is survived by his beloved partner, Luke McDonough, of 33 years and his dog, Gus his last rescue dog; his sisters Mary Jo McDonough, JoAnn Hackett, Patricia McDonough-Andrus and her husband Roger and Colleen McDonough. Along with his nieces and nephews, Sarah Andrus, Molly Andrus, Lauren Ewanyk, Justin Andrus, Michael Andrus and David Andrus. He is also survived by four grand-nieces Emma, Grace, Rebecca and Amanda.

I am so sorry about Paul - what a great guy. Best memories are the McDonough family swim lessons in Newark when I was 6 yrs old...I had just seen Paul at Mrs. Sophie Jackson's viewing year or so ago.
