He aimed for a well-managed life, plain and reasonable.
In good company: married more than 50 years,
Kids, grandson, sister, friends, old friends.
Life didn't have to be complicated: family, work.
As a boy he kept the furnace lit,
When a bucket of coal kept you from freezing in the winter.
And he knew ways of people,
What they wanted, the value of a good cigar.
Then came the war,
And a bum leg kept him stateside,
Not joining the boys at Normandy,
Who stayed there in European coffins
When their luck ran out.
His place was closer to home,
Working at Grumman, and patrolling the beach.
After the war, a house in Oceanport, then one in Eatontown.
Tending bar at The Long Branch Inn,
Helping run the place.
Later years, turkey dinners at home,
Going to the races, playing golf,
A happy shared life.
He'd come to know cars, food, and business,
and horses -- even owned a couple.
At eighty, he found he knew the songs of his day,
And started to sing at the Old Orchard's restaurant
He remembered all the words,
And a thousand simple pleasures
Every one of 'em worth remembering.

For my "Big Brother"
Thanks for all of the laughs and good times. I will always remember the drives from Baldwin to Long Branch in the 1940's. The "Model Homes", Hugo Cutter, The White Castle, "Them" etc.
