Sandra N. Berlin died Aug. 22 in Washington, D.C. at the age of 63. The cause was complications from multiple myeloma, which she had fought for over 9 years. She retired from the American Anthropological Association in 2006 as CFO/Deputy Director, having worked in finance and organizational management her entire career. Sandra Elizabeth Noweck was born in Morristown, N.J. She was raised in Mountain Lakes, NJ and Fair Haven, NJ and graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 1967. Growing up she was active in the River Rats and loved to race and teach sailing locally. She received a bachelor's degree in economics and German in 1972 and a master of business administration degree in 1974, both from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She settled in the Washington D.C. area after college and had lived in Falls Church, VA since 1987. Her love for sailing continued throughout her life, as did passions for travel, gardening, & genealogy. She was honored by the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation for her extensive fundraising work through the Race for Research.

Survivors include her daughter, Laura E. Berlin of Falls Church, VA; a sister, Linda N. Patterson and her husband Eugene C. Patterson of Fair Haven, NJ, nephews Scott J. Patterson of NJ & Eugene T. Patterson of CA, and 5 nieces & nephews in the Washington D.C. area.
