Thomas Costello Obituary

Thomas Patrick Costello

Whiting - Thomas Patrick Costello, 83, Whiting (Pine Ridge South)

Formally of Toms River and Jersey City passed away peacefully on February 13, 2021.

Tom was a life-long car salesman having worked at Halsey Chevrolet, DeMassi Cadillac, Ray Catena Mercedes and Contemporary Motor Cars before his retirement in 2011. He definitely missed the 'Good Old Days' and was always quick with a story of how things used to be. From Pamrapo Avenue to Western Avenue in Jersey City, he could tell you stories of who lived in every house up and down the block. Tom took amazing care of his family, including spending every summer in Silver Beach and countless trips to Disney, where he always felt at home. In 1984, the family moved to Toms River, across the street from Jersey City friends Flo and Eddie for the next chapter of their lives.

Tom will be greatly missed by his three children Thomas P. Costello II and wife Chris (Brick), Judi Defeo (Beachwood) and James Costello and wife Dana (Lavallette) and his 6 grand children Steven, Andrew, Joey, Ryan, Addyson & Grayson, and countless nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by the many cousins across the pond in Ireland.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 49 years Elizabeth "Betty" Costello (nee Hughes) in 2009 and his Mother Mary (nee Kelly) and Father Patty. Brothers Jimmy, Eddie and Patty; Sisters Regina and Helen, Sisters-in-law Eileen and Ellen Hughes, Brothers-in-law Warren Sprake, Thomas Hughes, James Hughes and Billy Hughes. He is survived by his sister Eileen Sprake and Sisters-in-law Jean Marie Hughes and Peggy Hughes.

Tom always said he 'had a great life,' with no regrets. At family gatherings, he could always be found spinning tales about the adventures he experienced and the people he shared those journeys with - especially with his wife Betty, who joined him on many trips through Europe.

A viewing will be held at Ryan Funeral Home at 145 Saint Catherine Boulevard in Toms River on Friday from 4-7pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Jersey Shore Council of the Boy Scouts of America at 1518 Ridgeway Road in Toms River, NJ 08755.

At the 1st anniversary of his death we fondly remember our cousin and friend Tom and of course his beloved wife and life partner Betty. They were a very special couple, very different in personality and stature but both warm and welcoming. We loved having them visit Ireland and fondly remember their kindness to us and our then young family when we stayed with them in Toms River. We were so pleased to have forged a close bond with them and our extended families over many decades and we remember Tom and Betty with great fondness.

I knew Tommy since I was 16 years old, I feel so bad I did not know he passed away, I heard it on the governors daily press conference, I was stunned, I had a conversation with Tommy in early February, we said after the winter we would get together for dinner at one of his favorite places Angelos in Lyndhurst, Tommy was like a dad to me, he was a very good man, I will miss his lectures on life. I would like to send my condolences to his three children I want to say your dad was a gem, I will miss him and will never forget him best regards Jerry Colombino.

Dear Costello Family
May your hearts be full of gratitude for Tom's life, who by all accounts, had a heart of gold. He has embedded many beautiful memories in the hearts and minds of those who knew him. He now joins his wife Betty in his new eternal home .
I had the privilige of meeting Tom and Betty, his mother and other family members in the summer of 1972 when I visited them in their holiday home in Jersey. That's a long time ago, but I can still recall the warmth and love they radiated.

Wishing the whole family peace and joy as you go forward.
Sincerely
Mary Hinterleitner (nee Costello) Vienna, Austria

We are with you in spirit from Dublin this evening as you gather to celebrate Tom's life. We spent happy times with him and Betty when they stayed with us here in Dublin many times over the past 34 years. They also made a trip with Tom’s sister Eileen, Tom did an Irish road trip with Thomas and James and sometimes Tom came on his own.
Always fun, and lots of chat as he reconnected with his cousins on the Costello side and also with his Mom’s relatives across the city and in the midlands near Athlone.
All of our family think of Tom with great fondness. We will long remember his kindness and cherish the richness and the warmth of his personality.

Tom What a great friend for 60 years and we reconnected some 25 years ago and he became my personal guide on trips to Europe with our Wagner College Graduate students. He knew someone everywhere whether we went to Ireland (of course) Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Germany, Austria and on and on over almost a decade, setting up visits with companies and old friends. I miss our regular phone calls which went on and on. We has an especially good one two weeks ago and we always said we loved each other. Save a space Tom and lift one with my brother Cliff and Uncle Jack. Love ya Donald
