Toms River - Vincent J. Murphy, 89, of Toms River, NJ, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at home. Born in Dobbs Ferry, NY, he lived in Brooklyn, NY before moving to Toms River in 1992. A parishioner of St. Justin the Martyr RC Church, Toms River, a member of the New Jersey 10-13, and the American Legion, he was also an avid bowler, and accomplished square dancer. Vincent's greatest passion was spreading joy during Christmas. For 20 years with the NYPD he would ride his horse into an arena of excited youngsters! For the next 30 years "Santa Murphy" entertained children for the Rockland Sheriff Department flying in on a helicopter to bring holiday happiness to many more children!

Vincent was predeceased by his wife, Pearl, in 1998, and his son Robert F. Murphy in 2008. He is survived by his companion of 18 years, Helen Rible, of Brick, NJ, children Douglas Murphy and his wife Vinni Rose of New Windsor, NY, Charles Murphy and his wife Lucille of Brooklyn, NY and Jacqueline Badalamente and her husband Joseph of Coram, NY, a brother Patrick Murphy and his wife Eileen of Edison, NJ, ten grandchildren Maria, Rosina, Vincent, Michael, Katherine, Matthew, Rebecca, Deanna, Lisa, Joseph, three great grandchildren Anthony, Eliana, Thomas and two more on the way this year.

Vincent was a United States Navy World War II veteran. Vincent was a Police Officer for the New York Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1972. He served on the NYPD Mounted Unit. Upon retirement from the NYPD, Vincent worked as an Emergency Service Technician for Citibank in New York City for 20 years, retiring in 1992.

The family will receive friends Sunday 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 995 Fischer Blvd., Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday 9:30am at St. Justin the Martyr RC Church, Toms River. Entombment to follow at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens, Woodbridge, NJ.
