Alberta Loree Shogren Gilmette

1927 - 2017

Loree was born to Albert and Clara Shogren on June 14, 1927, at the Walton Ranch in Yuba City. She passed on September 13, 2017, in Sacramento.

As the oldest of four children, her "big sister" duties paved the way for her future vocation as a nurse. Loree grew up in Corning with 2 brothers, 1 sister and 4 cousins. After the depression, the family moved to Oregon, where Loree was sent to a Christian academy to finish her education. She then went to college in Washington. After moving to Portland, she acquired a job at Multnomah County Hospital as a maid. This is when she decided she wanted to be a nurse. She later received her nurse's training at the Sisters at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, Oregon.

During her 60 year career as a registered nurse, she worked in several different fields of nursing, including migrant health, and as a nurse practitioner in Idaho, a medic on the Alaska Pipeline, an instructor at Yuba College, family and obstetric medicine, and hospital, convalescent and home care. Loree viewed every job as a learning opportunity to increase her knowledge and effectiveness as a nurse. After living and working in Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Washington, Loree made her way back to Marysville, California, in the early 1980's. She went back to college and earned a Bachelor's degree from University of San Francisco.

Loree was a strong believer in education, particularly for women. She believed one was never too old to return to school. She loved helping family and friends. Throughout the years, her encouragement and support assisted several of her loved ones on new endeavors and life decisions. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, travel and quilting. Loree was a woman of faith. She was a member of The Church on Cypress in Carmichael, and frequently taught Sunday School classes.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Gilmette, and a grandson, Harley Andrews. She is survived by three sons; Ray Keister of Idaho, Ken Phillips of Sacramento, and Brian Goff (Rebeccaa) of Caldwell, Idaho, a daughter, Patricia Phillips Barkey (John) of Sutter, 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017, at 2pm at the Sutter Cemetery in Sutter, California.
