I was in the same H.S. class as Bruce and didn't know him well. He was introverted and shy.as was I.
Attending a 10 year class reunion, I observed, with humor, all the classmates I'd last seen in HS were still mingling in the same cliques they'd been engaged when they were teenagers. There seemed to be minimal departure, and separation, from their ground-zero safe haven of High School.
Bruce approached me with a sincere and pleasant greeting and we talked about art, psychology, places, writers and books.
He was sure of himself and more confident than I remembered. He conveyed an intelligence, depth, texture and breadth I hadn't known. I was impressed and pleased to renew that acquaintance.
It was a reminder that our social aggregations in life, or high school, are obstructions.
It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see - H.D. Thoreau
I left that reunion, and haven't been to one sincebut I often recall our conversation as being the most meaningful and memorable one for me that eveningand hoped to one day, at another reunion, to thank him for that engagement and convey my respect.
The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone - Harriet Beecher Stowe
My belated salute to a fine and evolved gentle man.
