David Dunlop Obituary

David Karl Dunlop, 84, of Yuba City, CA, passed away at Adventist Health and Rideout Hospital in Marysville on October 6, 2022. He was born March 15, 1938, in San Francisco to Ethel and Andrew Dunlop. He lived with his mother and grandparents in San Francisco during WWII while his father served in the Pacific.

In 1945, his family moved to Marysville where his father worked as a pharmacist. As a boy, he ran a paper route in Marysville throwing papers to 145 houses each afternoon. He earned enough money to buy his very own Schwinn bicycle. He attended Marysville Elementary School and graduated from Marysville High School Class of 1956.

In both high school and college, he was an avid tennis player. He also taught swimming lessons for the American Red Cross at the Marysville City Swimming Pool.

After high school, David attended Yuba College and the College of the Pacific in Stockton where he majored in history and obtained his Master's degree and teaching credential. After college, he served in the National Guard and in 1961, began his teaching career at Wheatland High School where he taught US History.

In 1962, he married Susan Gross of Marysville; they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. He was the proud father of Brian David Dunlop and Andrea Lynn Dunlop McAfee. He had a passion for sports and was passionate about coaching high school tennis, wrestling, and football teams. In 1968, he started teaching US History at Yuba City High School. Always a wonderful provider for his family, he also spent 25 summers working in the peach orchards as a peach grader for the State of California. In 1985, he became the Assistant Principal at YCHS. He remained in that position until he retired in 1999.

In his retirement, he helped supervise student teachers at Chapman College. He and Susan enjoyed traveling and taking cruises as well as attending class reunions, model train conventions, and spring training games in Scottsdale, AZ. He loved working out at the gym, being with his family, watching Western films, and cheering on his favorite baseball teams. He was a proud inductee in the Yuba College Sports Hall of Fame, Wheatland High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Northern California Sports Association Hall of Fame.

He was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Marysville, CA, as well as an active member of the Yuba City Noon Kiwanis Club where he served as Lieutenant Governor in 2004-2005 for the Kiwanis California-Nevada-Hawaii District.

David is survived by his wife, Susan Gross Dunlop; son, Brian Dunlop; daughter-in-law, Paula Dunlop; son-in-law, Ian McAfee; grandchildren, Megan Dunlop Lee and her husband, Hudson Lee, Katie Dunlop, Charley McAfee, Stevie McAfee, sister-in-law, Charlotte Mattocks, and many, many friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Andrew; and his beloved daughter, Andrea.

David will be remembered for his love of high school sports, his outgoing personality, and for being a legendary teacher at Yuba City High School impacting the lives of the hundreds of students who were fortunate to have him as a teacher or coach. Everywhere he went, he always managed to run into someone who knew and loved him. His grandchildren knew him as "Choo Choo" because of his model train collection.

A private funeral and burial service is being held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations in his memory be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 800 D Street, Marysville, CA 95901.

We had so much in common: Friends & colleagues; YCUHS; Yuba College; tennis; coaching, and the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately we never met. Was looking forward to meeting him at the next HoF.
We did manage to exchange several E mails.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Dunlop family. Coach Dunlop was my tennis coach from 1978 - 1981 and my U.S. History teacher. I learned much from Coach Dunlop, both as a tennis player and a student. More importantly, he taught me and many others lifelong lessons about what is truly important in life. May you rest in peace, Coach.
