Dean Estabrook Obituary

Dean Monte Estabrook passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 85. He'd lived at Summerfield Memory Care in Yuba City, CA, for the last six months of a five year battle with Parkinson's and dementia.

He was born in San Jose, CA. Upon Dean's high school graduation, the family moved to Arizona, where Dean became a music major at U of A, Tucson, AZ. He earned a Bachelor of Music and decided to continue his schooling.

Dean feared he was close to being drafted into the Vietnam war, so he fulfilled his military obligation by joining an Army Reserve unit for six years while working to obtain his Master's Degree.

In three years, he had his Masters in Music Theory and Composition from San Jose State University, and in 1969, an honorable discharge from the Army.

In 1966, he'd gotten a tip that the Yuba City schools were unifying and would need a large number of new teachers.

He came up, interviewed, and became to make his mark teaching choir, band, and music theory over his 30-year career. He made many friends within the cadre of new teachers YCUSD hired.

In 1973, he married Cristina "Cris" Cadena. Tragically, Cris passed away in the Yuba City choir bus accident 1976. Dean was devastated by the loss of not only 26 students, but also his wife.

Though tempted, friends counseled him not to move away but to stray in Yuba City, CA, in the loving embrace of the town that shared his loss and grief.

In 1979, he married Christina "Christy" Young. They had a daughter, Adrian, in 1983. Prior to the bus accident, the Young family had introduced Dean and Cris to sailing on Folsom Lake.

He loved it so much that Dean bought his own 22' sailboat, naming it after the character Cris had danced as in the Nutcracker Ballet.

Via a national boating organization, USPS, Dean met several gentlemen who shared his love of sailing. They sailed various sailboats out the Golden Gate, up and down the CA coastline, and even up in the Puget Sound area.

This group of guys was known as the "Dirty Half Dozen", with the Cookie Monster as their official mascot.

Dean adjudicated at choral festivals in Northern CA for many years, trying to help students realize the wonder, joy, and artistry of making music with others.

Dean was honored by the CA Choral Director's Association with the Northern CA Director of the Year Award.

He wrote articles for the State Choral Director's Journal, and received the Jane Sarah Roberts Friend of Music Award in 2021 for his contributions to the local educational music scene.

Dean is preceded in death by his father, Monte G. Estabrook; mother, Evelyn T. Estabrook; wife, Cristina E. Estabrook; and all of his aunts; uncles; and several cousins on both sides of the family, including the recent passing of his beloved cousin, Lynn Betzina.

He is survived by his wife, of 46 years, Christina C. Estabrook; their daughter, Adrian Lynn Mora; grandchildren, Hamilton D. and Thea N. Mora; and several Estabrook and Tanner cousins.

The family would especially like to send heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Summerfield who took loving care of Dean during his relatively short stay there. The end came fast but you were there for him!

Many thanks also to the invaluable care he received from Sutter Hospice.

A Celebration of Life, and mini concert, will be held starting at 1 PM at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Yuba City, CA, on Sunday, January 4, 2026. A reception and sharing of the microphone will follow in the Ministry Center.

If desired, donations may be made to the Micheal J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, the Alzheimer's Foundation, Sutter Hospice, the YS Master Chorale, or the St. Andrew Music Fund.

Mr. E was my favorite highschool teacher. Funny, talented, serious about music and well loved by all of his students. He was the best!

I choose to remain anonymous in my tribute message as a proxy for the many of his former students that will silently experience the ache in their hearts upon reading Mr. Estabrook´s obituary.

Like many of his students, I was profoundly influenced by the lessons musical and otherwise learned during my hours, days, and years spent in the YCHS music department in general and in Mr. Estabrook´s presence specifically.

The fortunate among us have benefited from the uniquely positive influence of the men and women who´ve dedicated their lives to nurturing the talents and personal growth of the young people we once were, and we were blessed to have had such a person in Mr. Estabrook.

Though our lives post high school have taken many diverse paths, regardless of vocation, as students of his we´ve all benefited immensely from the musical and life lessons learned from the lovely Mr. E.

I was privileged to be taught by Dean beginning in 5th grade at Tierra Buena Elementary. My father, Bill Ashworth, arranged for Dean to tutor me on a cornet solo titled "Sunset" for the annual Solo and Ensemble Festival in Chico. I was the youngest player that year and received a high score thanks to my dad's tough love and Dean's methodical patience. Later, at Yuba City High I took music theory from Dean, both Diatonic Analysis and Harmony. Over the years I have tried to let Dean know what a profound effect his instruction and kindness had on me as a student-and most practically, how much what I learned shaped the life I've lived. I dedicated a recording to him, Love Press Ex-Curio, included him in my memoir, titled a piano improvisation after him, Mr. Estabrook's Rowboat (named after the fact that he taught us Schoenberg's 12 tone row system), and recently gave him a shoutout during a video I sent for our 50th grad anniversary (class of '74). I hope the message of gratitude got through. The point is this: He was a great teacher. Great teachers change student's lives. He changed mine and as a result shares in some way, anything good that has ever come my way because of music. RIP Dean. I'll see you on the other side. Thank you so much! From life to life. Blessings to all who survive you and to all you helped to thrive. From now on, whenever I think of you, I will think of God's provision and goodness and give thanks for you.

Ingrid and I had the fortune to know and be friends with Dean for over 50 years. We knew him professionally through his work in music education and as friends who mutually enjoyed classical music listening and attending such performances here and in Sacramento. Dining together at restaurants or at our individual homes was always an event we all looked forward to. Especially remembered are the "glory days" watching the S.F. 49ers with Montana and Young on Sunday afternoons--I still have a mark on the ceiling where Dean jumped up and hit his hand due to his being excited about a successful 49er play. It's not hard to say how much he will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him in so many different ways.

Dean was an inspiration to make music and recording engineering my life (until tinnitus forced my retirement). Great guy.
