I was privileged to be taught by Dean beginning in 5th grade at Tierra Buena Elementary. My father, Bill Ashworth, arranged for Dean to tutor me on a cornet solo titled "Sunset" for the annual Solo and Ensemble Festival in Chico. I was the youngest player that year and received a high score thanks to my dad's tough love and Dean's methodical patience. Ingrid and I had the fortune to know and be friends with Dean for over 50 years. We knew him professionally through his work in music education and as friends who mutually enjoyed classical music listening and attending such performances here and in Sacramento. Dining together at restaurants or at our individual homes was always an event we all looked forward to.
