Gary Jewett Obituary

November 19, 1937 - March 29, 2018

Gary Newfield Jewett passed away in Chico on March 29, 2018, after contracting ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease/Motor Neuron Disease) in 1989. Gary was born in Santa Rosa, California November 19, 1937, to Clinton and Marian Jewett. In 1945 the family moved to Williams and Gary made Colusa County his home for the rest of his life.

As a boy, Gary was a Boy Scout and active in 4-H projects involving sheep and hogs. Prior to graduating from Williams High School in 1955, Gary was a member of Future Farmers of America, earning the coveted national award of American Farmer.

During his college years at the University of California, Davis, Gary was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and photographer for the year-book staff. He enjoyed the active social life that those years brought.

After graduation, Gary worked for several years for the Cal-Ladino Clover Association. In 1961, Gary married Harriett Baxter and they had two children, Mollia and Clinton. He was a Williams Fire Commissioner, and served as an alternate member of the Williams Fire Protection Authority. He served as president of the Western Grain Association, and was an active member of the Williams Kiwanis Club and the Glenn-Colusa Wool Growers Association.

Gary farmed many different crops over the years, including rice and sheep. He enjoyed photography and hunting, and was an avid reader, particularly the history of the American frontier. Gary was an amazing mechanic and builder/rebuilder of harvesters and antique cars. His pride and joy was his 1926 Jewett car. He was an avid collector of all things old, and some would say Gary was a purveyor of all things rustic and in need of restoration.

Gary was diagnosed with ALS in 1991, having shown symptoms of the disease beginning in 1989. When hearing of another person diagnosed with ALS, Gary would often make contact to give his support to them. Gary spent many hours researching ALS and underwent clinical trials to help find a cure. His goal was to live to see ALS a curable disease. He received the ALS Iron Man Award in 1994.

Gary is survived by his former wife, Harriett Resch; son, Clinton Jewett (Michelle) of Colusa; daughter, Mollia Jewett of Williams; sister, Linda Jewett (Tony Ashby) of Corvallis, Oregon. He also leaves two grandchildren, Henry and Eleanor of Colusa; and three nephews, Mark Daterman (Naomi), Todd Daterman (Cindy) and David Daterman (Michele). Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton A. Jewett and Marian Newfield Jewett Cassel.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Williams Cemetery 2438 Zumwalt Road, Williams, CA. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association 2717 Cottage Way, Suite 17 Sacramento, CA 95825.

Love and prayers to the family. Even as a small child , Gary held a special place in my heart because he was kind and patient with we younger kids. Our families spent a lot of time together and Gary was always there for us when he could have been off doing big boy things. He. Fought a good fight against ALS and helped many others along the way. May he now rest in peace that he so richly deserves. Treasure the good memories and hold them in your hearts.

Our sympathy and prayers are with Mollia and Clinton.
We have so many great memories of Gary up at Bucks Lake. Annually he hosted a big bbq for all his friends up there.
Gary was a fighter and wouldn't let ALS define him.
