Jewell Clifton Obituary

Jewell passed away quietly on Wednesday, November 17 at the age of 94. Born May 14, 1916 on the outskirts of Minco, Oklahoma to Samuel and Mary Elizabeth Burchfield. Jewell was one of seven children. She graduated from the eighth grade and later enrolled into night school in California to further her education. She married Carl Clifton in 1936. They continued to live in Oklahoma, where Carl was employed as a farm worker. Their first daughter was born while living in Oklahoma, but later moved to California where their remaining four children were born. They first moved to Johnsondale and stayed a short time before moving to Porterville, CA. They then moved into the outskirts of Marysville into a house on Ostrom Road. Carl worked for Diamond Lumber and Erickson's Lumber Co. During her life, Jewell worked as a farm worker and worked several years in a box factory. While living in California, she worked as a cook for Pacific Telephone Co. Jewell's main concern was being a homemaker, loving wife and mother. They had been members of the Feather River Baptist Church in Marysville, where Jewell assisted as a Sunday School Teacher. She enjoyed camping and loved to dance. Her hobbies were fishing; quilting and doing intricate crochet work. Jewell enjoyed drawing, and had several articles published in the opinions section of the local paper. At her home out on Ostrom Road, she loved growing flowers and tending to her rose bushes. Some of the happiest times of her life were when she was caring for and raising her children. When her children were grown with families of their own, she used to love the holidays. It was always a festive occasion when the families would gather for Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter. Carl passed away in 1971, and she later married Josiah Gilmore of Yuba City. Josiah and Jewell lived on a small parcel of land south of Yuba City, but later moved into Summerfield in Yuba City. She was preceded in death by her parents Samuel and Elizabeth along with sisters Della, Lilly, Dovie, Orphie, Stella and her only brother David. She was also preceded in death by Carl Clifton, daughters: Jean Adams and Anne Smith, her second husband Josh and grandson Tony Polson. Jewell is survived by her children Carlene Polson and her husband Ron of Carson City, NV; Donald Clifton and his wife Louri of Biggs, CA; and Roy Clifton and his wife Debbie of Yuba City. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 16 great great grandchildren. Jewell was a loving person to her family, genuine and sincere to those who knew her. She will be missed dearly. Send Condolences at www.appealdemocrat.com
