Mary Mayfield Obituary

Mary Mayfield, lovingly known as Nana to her family, passed away at the age of 82 on May 13, 2024.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Sutter and Yuba City, CA.

Vibrant, ever optimistic, and passionate about life, she participated and volunteered in many community service projects and local events.

She was on the first board to initiate the Sutter Buttes Day.

An avid bridge player and bowler, Mary was also a woman of adventure who loved to travel, and visited all 50 states as well as 6 of the 7 continents.

In 2023, she journeyed to Africa for a safari experience of a lifetime. Mary splashed sunshine into every conversation and lit up the room with her radiant positivity.

Mary's life was rich with dozens of close friends, many from elementary school and Yuba City High School where she met and later married her high school sweetheart, Russell Mayfield.

They raised their family in Sutter, CA, where she worked as a substitute in local schools and taught swimming lessons in her backyard to countless children and their children's children.

At age 48, she went back to school to obtain her Bachelors Degree at Chico State so that she could continue substitute teaching.

"Kids and thinking positive keep you young at heart." and she lived this out.

Mary intentionally planned trips to make memories with her family. A Disney cruise, beach house rentals, and memories with many of her grandkids on a personalized trip upon their completion of college were some of her highlights.

She recently planned a trip for the family to meet in Virginia, so she could meet her newest great-grandbaby born in Germany at the end of this month.

As an extended family member wrote, "She would travel to the moon if somebody she loved was there." Family together was her greatest joy.

After the death of her husband, Mary was deeply impacted by the Trauma Intervention Program "TIP", and she became a TIP volunteer to support people in their time of need related to death or trauma.

She also volunteered at Bridges to Housing, St. Andrews food closet "Mother Hubbard's Cupboard", and served as an active member of the local AAUW organization "American Association of University Women".

Mary is preceded in death by her mother and father; Ralph and Marie Ogburn; as well as her husband, Russell Mayfield.

She leaves behind her 3 children: Brenda Mayfield, Steven Mayfield, and Michael Mayfield; as well as 7 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Andrews Church in Yuba City, CA, on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 2:30 pm . Mary will be laid to rest at a family cemetery in Shingletown, CA.

Mary was outstanding ... so much fun and a wonderful friend. She had so much love to give and it was evident with everyone she met. Her lucky grandchildren enjoyed a trip anywhere they wanted to go upon college graduation, so long as they planned it and set the tone. She came to visit me in Georgia last year when she realized I was not in a state far away from where she was visiting!

Mary made a huge mark on this world and I´m so proud to have been her friend. Barbara Thompson Bacarella
