Vernon Burrows Obituary

Vernon Lynn Burrows, 92, passed away unexpectedly on June 16, 2025, at his home in Yuba City, CA.

Vern was born in Yuba City and lived his entire life in the Hub Area. He grew up in Yuba City on Jones Street with his brothers, Jim and Curt, and many family members. He attended Bridge Street School and graduated from YCHS in 1950.

Following three years in the US Navy, Vern returned to Yuba City and attended Chico State and UC Davis, to obtain his degree and teaching credentials.

He spent his entire 30-plus year career in Yuba City schools, first at Lincoln School and then Gray Avenue, where he taught science and coached several generations of Yuba City families.

"Mr. Burrows" was popular and beloved by students and fellow faculty alike, known for his optimistic and positive outlook on life and his genial manner.

When school was out for summer, Vern was a field man for California Canner & Growers, managing Sutter Station on Railroad Avenue.

In 1984, Vern met the love of his life, Janet, at a Dixieland Jazz event in Sacramento, CA. He asked for her phone number and soon, in March of 1985, they were married.

Vern and Jan shared a love of traditional jazz, dancing their way through concerts and festivals throughout the U.S. and traveling with some of their favorite bands to London, Paris, Ireland, Germany, Australia, and more.

They were active in the annual Yuba City Prune Festival every year of its existence, Jan serving a term as Chairman and Vern booking and running the music.

Together for 40 years, Vern and Jan were active parents, grandparents and great grandparents. They were quick to come to the rescue for childcare, attend school and sporting events, help with homework, and do whatever was needed.

Their home was the site of family events, holiday meals and perennially filled with children.

In addition to Jan, Vern is survived by his son, Randall Burrows (Susan Grivas); daughters, Cathryn Duncan (Jeremy) and Suzanne Wooldridge (Marvin); three brothers, Rusty Burrows, Sandy Burrows (Kandy) and Mickey Burrows (Kay); two sisters, Jo Edwards (Ri) and Wendy Houtz (Randy); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Vern's pride was his nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Vern was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Arritt Arnoldy; step-father, Francis Arnoldy; father, William E. Burrows; step-mother Norma Burrows; brothers, Curtis and George ("Jim") Burrows; and, sister-in-law, Lee Burrows.

A open memorial service will be held on July 19, 2025, at the at the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts, 754 Plumas Street, Yuba City, CA, 11 AM to 2 PM.

Donations to the Yuba Sutter Regional Arts Council are suggested in lieu of flowers.

Vern and my Uncle Hank Hanlin were great friends during their teenage years. Stories of riding unicycles, and shaking it up on the dance floor were often told and retold. Others stories surfaced from time to time between my Uncle Hank and Mom, Marjorie ( Golden) Hanlin who attended MHS graduating from the same class as Uncle Hank.
Heartfelt condolences to all of the family.

I distinctly remember how nervous/scared I was at the prospect of having to cross the highway for junior high at Lincoln school after finishing the 6th grade at Lincrest. Yes, that´s how it was back in the day. After the first week though, thanks to both Mr Burrows, and Mr Marros, the nervousness and fear were gone! They were the perfect teachers at just the right moment in my life. They made learning both interesting and fun, and allowed not only me, but also my classmates, the opportunity to grow into being not quite adults, but also no longer being children. I mention them both together because that´s how I remember them, a team! I didn´t realize it at the time but they made an everlasting impression on me that has stuck with me for all these years. I´m pretty sure that I´m not the only one to feel that way either. Thank you both for all that you did! Rest easy gentlemen knowing that you made a difference in countless young lives. Thank you both!

I was truly heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of my favorite human beings, Vern Burrows. I've known him almost all my life. My dad and he were more than good friends. I always admired him so much because he was so cool and even keeled, someone I could always talk to. To Jan, and Randy, I'm so sorry. I will be at the memorial for sure.
