Lewis Shaffer Obituary

LEWIS N SHAFFER III Lewis Newell Shaffer III, 76, passed away September 13, 2025, in a local hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Born on January 31, 1949, in Fukuoka, Japan. Lewis was the son of Army Lt. Col. Lewis N Shaffer Jr. and Lola Norene Shaffer. As a child of a military family, he experienced life across several continents during his formative years-attending schools in Illinois, Alabama, Texas, and Germany. After graduating from Bullard High School, Lewis pursued higher education at Tyler Jr College and Stephen F Austin University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. His early professional life included teaching art at a local high school a reflection of his creative spirit and appreciation for craftsmanship. Lewis later followed in his father's footsteps by joining the United States Army, where he built a distinguished career spanning nearly two decades. His service included two tours in Korea and numerous assignments that demonstrated his dedication to duty and country. Upon retiring from the Army, Lewis settled in LaVernia, Texas, just outside of San Antonio, with his beloved wife Kathleen Chmura Shaffer, who also served honorably in the military. A man of many talents and interests, Lewis had a passion for building intricate model planes and cars. He enjoyed working with his hands-constructing toy boxes and completing small projects both for his home and for others. His love for animals was unmistakable; they were drawn to him with unwavering affection and often vied for space on his lap. He is survived by his devoted wife Kathleen Chmura Sha+er of LaVernia, two sisters, Karen Shaffer of Austin, Texas, Lonna Shaffer of Bullard, Texas, niece, Patricia Shaffer Ramirez, and two great nieces, Emma and Charlotte. Lewis also had a deep appreciation for history and documentaries, which reflected his thoughtful nature and curiosity about the world around him. Above all else, he held a profound love for God and family values that guided him throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lt. Col. Lewis N Shaffer Jr, and Lola Norene Shaffer, brother, Lance N Shaffer, and sister, Lynda N Shaffer, all of Bullard, Texas. May the memory of Lewis Newell Shaffer III bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting tribute to a life well lived in service, creativity, faith, and love. A funeral services was held in San Antonio, Texas on September 25, 2025 followed by burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
