Anthony "Tony" Schatz

Madison, SD - Anthony "Tony" Schatz, age 93, died at Bethel Lutheran Home on December 10, 2015.

Anthony Michael Schatz was born on September 29, 1922 at Hauge, ND to Joseph and Katherinia (Ipach) Schatz. He married Virginia Pasqual at Bremerton, WA on August 23, 1944.

He is survived by his wife - Virginia of Madison. One son - Steve (Susan) of Mobridge, SD and two daughters - Patricia (Darrel) Simon of Madison and Susan (Emil) Stanec of Rapid City. 8 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 14, 2015 at St Thomas Aquinas Church with Rev Dewayne Kayser officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.

He grew up in Wakpala, SD where he graduated from high School. He worked at a CC Camp before enlisting in the US Navy. He served on the USS Block Island until it was sunk by German Torpedoes off the coast of Africa on May 29, 1944. He also served in the liberation of the Philippines.

After the service he moved to Spokane, WA where he worked in the grocery business until moving to SD in 1960. He started Tony's Jack & Jill Store in McLaughlin, SD which he sold in 1980. He started a Baskins-Robbins in Dickinson, ND. They moved to Madison in 2004.

He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was active in many civic organizations including the Better McLaughlin Club and McLaughlin Jaycees.

There will be a Parish Scripture Service and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:00 PM on Sunday at Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
