Arlene Vick Obituary

Arlene M. Vick

Arlene (Kapell) Vick was born in 1932 in Ossian, Iowa to Albert and Cora (Tinderholt) Kapell. After graduating high school, Arlene became a beautician and went on to own her own beauty shop. In May of 1952 she married Roger Vick at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, Iowa.

Roger and Arlene founded Dakota Acoustical Tile Co. and Sioux Building Products in Sioux Falls, SD in 1964 and worked in that business while raising 4 children: Deanna (Joseph) Mau, Jacque (Bob) Callis, Warren Vick and Karen (Mike) McKee.

In 1983 Arlene and Roger purchased Whispering Pines Campground in the Black Hills and moved permanently to the Hills in 1985. They retired from the campground business in 1993, but continued traveling in their motor home. Arlene continued to travel in her motor home even after Roger's death in 2004.

Arlene and Roger moved to Hill City in 1999 and continued to be members of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Arlene was particularly fond of the children of St. Rose - becoming active in the Religious Education program, helping to serve meals to the children who called her "Grandma".

Arlene passed away peacefully at home on September 14, 2014, surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. Anyone who knew Arlene well knew that she was a survivor. During her life she survived 3 other bouts with cancer and a cardiac arrest. The family called her "the energizer bunny" because "she kept going and going".

Grateful for having shared her life are her surviving children and grandchildren: Jacque Callis, her husband Bob and their son Evan (Hill City), her son Warren Vick (Sioux Falls), Karen McKee, her husband Mike (Hill City) and their children Brad McKee and his wife Lexi (Casper, Wyoming), Ben McKee and Colton McKee (Hill City), and Joseph Mau (husband of Arlene's daughter Deanna who preceded her in death) (Woodinville, Washington) and their daughters, Hilary Mau (New York, NY) and Alicia Mau (Woodinville, WA).

Arlene also wanted to acknowledge her best friend Norma Henderson. In her words "A lot of people in this town don't know how special she was to me, and how important Thursday mornings were"

In addition to the above, she is survived by her half-brothers and sisters, Arlette Schneider, Ted Kapell, Jane Callas, Al Joe and Robert Kapell, her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Roger Vick, her daughter Deanna and her 2 sisters, Barbara Wurzer and Celine Schumann.

There will be a Rosary said for Arlene at St. Rose Catholic Church in Hill City, SD on Friday, September 19 at 6:30 pm with the memorial mass to be held at St. Rose on Saturday, September 20 at 10 am. Grave-side services will follow at Hill City cemetery.

She was a good one. Making lunches at for us with the other Moms at St Lamberts on holidays, rooting for her kids' softball teams and a good neighbor.

What a great lady Arlene was...I loved when she would come into subway and visit with me...truly a special person.
