Harry Myers Obituary

Harry S. Myers

"It's going to be a good day … a really good day. I'm ready to go Home." Thus began the day Harry went Home to meet his Heavenly Father.

Harry Stockton Myers, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 20th, at his home, surrounded by his family. Harry was born on Oct.2, 1922, in Mt. Vision, NY. He spent his childhood in many small towns and attended college in North Dakota, before joining the Lee Williams Band. In 1947, he took a position at the bank in Bloomfield, NE. While there, he met his lifelong "sweetheart," Marion St. Onge, and they were married in 1948. He entered the ministry in 1956, serving churches in Chamber, Amelia, Dakota City and Home, NE. The family moved to Rapid City, SD, in 1958 when he accepted a position at the Rapid City National Bank. He later joined the staff at Lutheran Social Services in Sioux Falls. He remained there until he took on his biggest challenge and success as Executive Director of Children's Village - Family Services (The Village) in Fargo, ND in 1969. He served as CEO until his retirement in 1983. He and Marion enjoyed traveling and spending time at their home in Fargo: Little Cormorant Lake, MN and Green Valley, AZ. They moved to Sioux Falls in 2002 to be closer to family.

Harry was a gifted public speaker, preacher and musician. He loved the Lord and filled many pulpits as interim pastor. He was a member of Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church, served on the board and was involved in the Omega group. Marion and Harry called on shut-ins and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. They found something to celebrate every day, even the simplest things. He always put his family first and served as a role model at how to celebrate the joy of living. Everyone was greeted with, 'Hello, Friend," "Thank you, friend," and no one who met him left unchanged.

He was preceded in death by his parents, The Revs. DeWitt and Virginia Myers; brothers, DeWitt (Bud) and Mark; sister, Martha Heikes.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Marion; sons David (Celeste Baker), Chico, CA, and Dr. Jeffrey (Eileen McMyler), Ann Arbor, MI; daughters, Andrea (Michael) Doolittle, Missoula, MT, and Sally (AJ) Swanson, Canton, SD. Grandchildren; Kristin (Brian) Gruhot, Lynd, MN; Jen Warrant, Algona, IA: Lee Michael (Melissa) Horner, Lewiston, ID; Stacey (Jeff) Williams, Seattle, WA and 12great-grandhicldren.

A Celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 30th, at 10:30 am at Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. www.heritagesfsd.com.
