Maria Pappas Obituary

Maria Pappas

Presbytera Maria Pappas, 80, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017 in Sioux Falls, SD. Maria Karnezis was born in Silimna, a charming village outside of Tripoli, Greece.

On July 10, 1960, Presbytera was united in marriage to Reverend Angelo Pappas in Greece. Her first son, Aristotle was born in Greece. Her second son, Chris, was born in Australia where the family received their first parish assignment. Finally, Presbytera's third son, Anastastios was born in the United States when the family received a parish assignment in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Known always for her gracious hospitality, YiaYia was renowned for having koulourakia and coffee on hand for any guest.

Presbytera Maria's passion for her Greek Orthodox faith and her love for her Lord led to bountiful life-long volunteer efforts at Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Sioux Falls, where she was an active church member. Her generous and philanthropic heart also led to many years of loving, dedicated service visiting shut ins.

An avid gardener and voracious cook, Presbytera's homemade Greek meals will never be forgotten. YiaYia was the light and the joy of her family. Whether she was enjoying a drive to see Christmas lights with you, babysitting grandchildren, or teaching you how to make one of her famous recipes, time spent with YiaYia was truly precious. Grateful for having shared her life, are her husband Fr. Angelo; sons, Dr. Aristotle (Gail); Chris (Jessica); and Dr. Anastasios (Carey); eight beloved grandchildren, William, Ellen, Wyatt, Evangelios, Gavriel, Angelo, Alex and Arie; many godchildren, friends and family.

Presbytera Maria will be laid to rest at Hills of Rest Cemetery after funeral services on Saturday, March 11th at 10:00AM at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1936 S Summit Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57105. Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm Friday with the family present to greet friends, and a Trisagion Service at 5:15 pm at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S Main Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57104. Memorials may be directed to the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church.

Maria and I were friends at the YMCA where she logged many miles on the treadmill. She always had a smile even when she wasn't feeling the best. She will be missed.
