Phyllis Noble Obituary
Phyllis Ruth Noble, 90, of Vermillion, SD, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
Phyllis was born on July 16, 1925 in Denver, CO to J. Homer and Ruth Elizabeth Victoria (Jewett) Hauptman. She graduated from the University of Denver with a BA in social sciences and became an elementary school teacher. She married Jack L. Noble on Dec. 28, 1947, in Denver, CO. She moved to Vermillion, SD where Jack was teaching at the University.
Phyllis was a member of United Church of Christ/Congregational, PEO, Eastern Star, and AAUW. She spent much time working with Women's church circles, was on the State Board for the UCC, and was a long time member of the USD Faculty Women's Club. Phyllis and Jack were big supporters of music at USD, attending many faculty and student recitals and hosting receptions at their home. Phyllis worked at the USD Registrar's Office from 1972-1982.
Phyllis was often noted for her strong opinions, forward thinking, and her concern for others. She loved reading, travel, entertaining, political discussions, and crossword puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; two sons, Bruce and Kris; a sister, Lois Van Nattan and a brother, J. Hugh Hauptman.
She is survived by two sons, David (Christine Mason) of Mead, CO, and Paul (Melissa Hoffman-Noble) of Tulsa, OK; two daughters, Jane (Bryan) Paxson of Sisters, OR and Ruth (Jerry) Lemire of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren, Carol Mollet, Sarah (Jay) Williams, Eric Noble, and Laura Noble; one great granddaughter, Ruby Jane Williams; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Vermillion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the organ fund at the UCC Church or the Jack L. Noble Scholarship Fund at USD. HansenFuneralHome.com.
