Richard M. Lamar

Sioux Falls - Richard Lamar, 92, died Friday, April 3, 2020 at Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community.

Richard M. Lamar was born July 20, 1927 to Mark Lamar and Leah Lamar (Sessions) in Worcester, MA. He was an only child. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy where he served 1 year and 1 day. After his service, he attended Harvard University and graduated with a degree in English in 1950. He worked for several years for Norton Company in Worcester, MA. He got a Master's Degree in social work from Clark University and went to work for the Massachusetts Department of Social Welfare.

He married Claire Rivard of Worcester in 1968 and they had two children: Mark (d.2017) and Leila. In 1974 the family moved from Worcester to Cape Cod where Richard was a supervisor for the Department of Social Welfare for the state of MA, in Falmouth and Barnstable, and was active in his church, St. Peter's in Osterville, MA. He enjoyed travel and went to Alaska, Scotland & Ireland, Hawaii, the Western United States, Texas, Australia and New Zealand. He loved Boston sports, especially the Bruins and the Red Sox.

Richard was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville, MA where he was on the vestry committee. He was also a member of the Harvard Club of Cape Cod.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Claire and a son, Mark. He is survived by his daughter, Leila and her husband, Steve, and 4 grandchildren.

Memorial services for Richard will be held at a later date.
