Roger Telkamp Obituary
Brookings - Roger Ernest Telkamp, 89, passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at the United Living Community in Brookings, SD due to COVID-19 and Parkinson's Disease. Memorial services for Roger will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the United Living Community, 1st United Methodist Church, any Veterans group or your local Parkinson's Support Group.
Robert Leroy Benton, the son of Eva Benton from Fairmount, MN, was born June 15, 1931 in Sioux Falls, SD. He was adopted a few weeks of age by Ernest F. and Ila (Tifft) Telkamp and renamed Roger Ernest Telkamp. Roger grew up on a farm south of Brookings, SD. He attended elementary school at district #92 and graduated from Brookings High School in 1949. Roger graduated from SDSC Aggie College in 1951. Roger enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean conflict as a Combat Engineer attached to the Air Force North of the 38 parallel.
Roger Telkamp married Barbara G. Donnelly on November 14,1954 in Sioux Falls, SD. They soon purchased a farm. Roger tended the farm and attended classes at SDSC. Roger was employed at Beckman Implement, SDSC Agronomy Dept. and was a field technician for 28 years at the Northern Grain Insect Lab. After retirement, Roger worked a few years part-time for Bio Genetics. Roger was a life member of the Elks, VFW (serving as adjutant) and the Bruce Legion where he served as commander and county commander.
Happy to have shared his life are his wife of 66 years, Barbara; daughter, Cynthia (Bill) Jamison of Fargo, ND; 2 sons, Ryan (JoEllen) Telkamp of Torrance, CA and Larry (Marta) Telkamp of Britton, SD; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Charmian Calkins; brother-in-law, Richard Donnelly and grandson, Alexander Telkamp.
