Thomas W. Mark

Thomas Mark, 74, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Sanford Centennial Hospice Cottage.

Family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Monday, January 4, Miller Funeral Home-Downtown, 507 S. Main Ave. with Public Masonic Services at 7:00 pm.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, January 5, at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral, 500 S. Main Ave.

Thomas White Mark, son of Simon L. and Ruth M. (Mulroy) Mark, was born October 14, 1941 in Jamestown, ND. The family moved to Aberdeen, SD where Tom attended grade school and graduated from Central High School in 1959. He went to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion where he earned his BS Degree in Mathematics. While in college he was a member of SAE Fraternity and the South Dakota Air National Guard. He was honorably discharged on May 22, 1966.

Tom was united in marriage with Valli Oswald on August 25, 1962 at First Baptist Church in Aberdeen, SD. They moved to Minneapolis, MN where he worked for St. Paul Fire and Marine for a few years. It was in Minneapolis that they were blessed to adopt their daughter, Jill, in 1970.

They soon moved to Philadelphia, PA where he continued his education by attending Wharton School of Business, where he earned his Master's Degree in Business. His desire was to work in a bank, so he needed experience. He accepted a position at Traveler's Insurance in Hartford, CT for a short time, and returned to Minneapolis, MN in 1974 where he began his bank career at First Bank Systems, known as US Bank. An opportunity for growth brought him to Grand Forks, ND for the next 12 years, where he worked with First National Bank. In 1987, they returned to Minneapolis to work at Wayzata Bank and in 1991, they moved to Sioux Falls where he has worked for First National Bank until his retirement in 2005.

Tom enjoyed keeping busy. In retirement, he taught business classes at National American University and Kilian College in Sioux Falls. Tom was an active member and treasurer of Calvary Episcopal Cathedral, Board member of McCrossen's Boys Ranch, Mentor with CASA, Past President of Kiwanis Club of Sioux Falls, and a mason with Trinity Lodge #200 A.F.& A.M., Sioux Falls Valley of Scottish Rite, El Riad Shrine where he was active in the Culinary Unit, the Golf Unit and the Ski Unit.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Valli Mark; his daughter, Jill Mark; and granddaughter, Madison Mark-Carson, all of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister, Liz (Tim) Stern, Mesa, AZ; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Mark, Osseo, MN; Brother and sister-in-laws, Rosalie (Stan) Schmidt, SD & FL, Glenda (Chuck) Carrier, Chandler, AZ, Rod (Bev) Oswald, Sioux Falls, SD, Torrie (Suzie) Oswald, Chaska, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Ruth Mark; a brother, Dr. Peter Mark; and his father and mother-in-law, Eddie and Beth Oswald.
