Verla Feldman Obituary
Verla Marie Nutter Feldmann, age 89, died Thursday, Mar. 17, 2016 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Verla was born on April 20th, 1926 in Joplin, Missouri to Oliver and Hazel Davis. Joplin is also where she grew up. After grade school, her family moved to Commerce, Oklahoma, which is where she went to high school. After graduating, she attended Northeastern Oklahoma Junior College. She married Fayette (Fay) Nutter in Commerce, OK on October 14th, 1945.
After medical school and residency, they moved to Beresford, SD where Fay established his medical practice and raised their 3 daughters. Verla had a special role in the practice as the after-hours contact, helping dispatch Dr. Nutter to community house calls. Some patients called her their guardian angel. They moved to Canton, SD, Johnson City, TN, and Fayetteville, AR, until Fay's death in 1978. Verla returned to Sioux Falls, and worked at Younkers. After marrying Hilbert (Hip) Feldmann in 1981, they lived happily in rural Chester and Madison, SD until Hip's death in 2003. She enjoyed living in the Dow Rummel community afterwards, until her passing.
Verla was committed to her Christian faith and easily moved into church life of whatever community she was living in. She made friends easily, and never met a stranger, since she made sure everyone was introduced.
She laughed easily and enjoyed a crowd of people, or a table for two. She appreciated every day as a new way to help introduce others to the "right… kind thing to do".
She is preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Hazel Hammond Davis; two brothers, Oliver and Walter; a sister, Leona Hawthorne; two nephews, Scott and Jack Aschinger.
Her memory is treasured by her daughters, Jane (R.C.) Johnson, Ruth (Les) Toon, and Carol (Ken) Engelhart; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and the many friends who became family.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, May 29, 2016 at 4:00 pm at the Halladay-Peterson Chapel at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls.
Memorial may be directed to The Banquet in Sioux Falls, SD. www.heritagesfsd.com.
