Warren Bolin Obituary

Warren Bolin

Warren H. Bolin was born on November 7, 1920 in Portland, Oregon. He attended Portsmouth Grade School and Roosevelt High School where he was active in athletics, especially football and baseball. During his college years World War II began. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the European theatre as an officer. Following his discharge from the military in 1946, he began a career in education in the Portland area, teaching mathematics and coaching. In 1947 he married Jean Read and from that relationship, four children were born. Upon retirement in 1982, Warren received the Distinguished Service award from the school district. In 2006 he was inducted into the Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame and in 2013 he was named an Alumnus of the Year by the Roosevelt High School alumni association.

The greatest event of Warren's life took place in August, 1950 when he became a Christian while listening to a presentation of the gospel preached by Billy Graham. Warren heard and responded to the message of salvation and it changed his life and that of his young family. He became an active member of the church. Warren lived in the same neighborhood in Portland for most of his life. However, in 2008 he moved to Canton, South Dakota to live near his oldest son, James. He resided in Canton until his death on November 20th, which was directly related to a serious fall in his residence and the medical complications from that event. While in Canton he faithfully attended the Redeemer Free Lutheran Church and made many friends and acquaintances there. Warren was preceded in death by his father and mother: Swan and Harriet; his wife, Jean; his only sibling, Clarence; and his granddaughter, Catie Bolin. He is survived by his four children: Barbara, Beijing, China; James, (Ruth) Canton, SD; Daniel, (Cay) Tyler, Texas; and Paul, (Jane) College Station, Texas; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A celebration of his life will take place on Tuesday, December 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the Redeemer Free Lutheran Church located on Hwy 18 on the west side of Canton. Please direct any memorial gifts to the building fund of the Redeemer Church or a charity of your choice. andersonandsonsfh.com

I met the Mr. and Mrs. Bolin in 1983 in Mankayane, Swaziland. They helped me with education for 3yrs. I lived with them as family. I tried to track them in 2013 only to learn from Ruth that Mr. Bolin could not be able to hold a telephonic conversation. Today I learn here that he is no more. My condolences. May his soul rest in peace.

I was a student teacher in 1972 with Jim Webb and Gary Walls let me coach the Freshmen Bomber football team. Mr. Bolin intimidated me at first but as I got to know him he shared a lot of football knowledge and strategy with me. He was stern on the outside but had a good heart for kids on the inside. Madison was a great school with great teachers and coaches who prepared me for 34 years of Teaching, Coaching and Athletic Administrator. Thank you Mr. Bolin for your wisdom and heading me in the right direction.

My 82 year old father was coached and taught by Mr Bolin at Washington High. Imagine our surprise when I sat in his Geometry class in the mid Seventies at Madison. He definitely left an impact on our family. Many thanks!

My wife always reads the obituaries and she noticed one was of Warren Bolin who taught at Washington High when I attended there. Mr. Bolin was my American History teacher during my junior year, 1957-1958. I remember him quite well because he did me a very large favor. It happened during the first day of class when he asked a history question to which I knew the answer. Being somewhat of a smart aleck, I just said it out loud. He kindly informed me that in his class I was to raise my hand and then answer the question. Being the mature student of 16 that I was at that time, and probably wanting to show off a bit, I raised my hand and said the answer again. His pleasant expression changed immediately. He very sternly told me in front of everyone in class that that was not how things were done in his class. Then told me to go and stand outside in the hall by the door till he came out. Sheepishly I got up, walked to the door with about 25 pair of eyes on me, opened it, and stepped out into the hall. I stood out there and I waited. I remember hoping no one would see me standing there; and if I remember correctly, no one did. It seemed like an eternity but it was probably just about 5 minutes or so when he opened the door and stepped out into the hall. He closed the door and our little chewing out session concluded with him asking me if I was ready to cooperate with his rules.
My father booked no nonsense from me in a dispute with one of my teachers. The teacher was right, and I was wrong; dad was nearly always correct. I assured Mr. Bolin that I would cooperate. Then he opened the door and waited for me to go in first. All 25 pair of eyes followed me back to my seat. I was embarrassed so badly I can still remember that walk with everyone watching.
I then understood exactly what he expected of me in that class. I also knew that he was right to expect that from me. I never smarted off in his class or any other High School class again.
He did exactly what he should have done to me in that case. I learned a valuable lesson about respect for authority that has helped me ever since. I just wish I could have told him how much good that did for me that day but I never got it done.

Mr. Bolin's geometry class at Madison was the best; it was fun and I actually 'got it'. Plus even in the early 1970's he was bald just like my dad! Please know that he made a difference in a lot of student's lives.

Mr Bolin was my Geometry teacher at Madison High School in 1978. He would get so excited about the pythagorean theorem! He would jump up, wave his hands in the air and say "hold the phone! Hold the phone!" He was so enthusiastic and passionate about math and his students. To this day, whenever I'm trying to explain something to my kids I try to channel Mr. Bolin's passion. I've thought of him often over the years and feel grateful to have had him for my teacher. I'm glad that he lived a meaningful, long life. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Bolin was my first year Algebra teacher when I was a freshman. He was a great teacher, and always there to help students when needed. Even though it was a math class, he still paced in front of the class like a football coach.

I remember the old Madiison days where my Dad Gary Walls, and Jim Webb coached. I was just a little kid then but I remember how much the players all loved you. After the game I remember trying to listen in at the coaches meetings and socials. You had aspecial way of firing up those kids, and they played their heart out for you. My dad and Jim were so very fond of you. I hope my dad is there to welcome you into heaven.

I was a student of Mr. Bolin's in High School at Madison in 1960 He was one of my favorite teachers with a good sense of humor. For some reason I remember that he always attached a rubber band to the bottom button of his shirt connected to the button on his pants. He did that every single day. My condolences to his family. I have many fond memories of him.
