Sandra Miller Obituary

Sandra Miller

Born: March 10, 1944 | Died: March 20, 2026

Sandra Grubb Miller, beloved daughter, mother, aunt, sister, colleague, friend, neighbor and force for good, passed away on Friday, March 20th , 2026 at the age of 82. She is survived by her cherished daughters Stephanie Lamarr Miller and Jennifer Miller Boyle (Neil), her treasured grandsons Sean Mitchell Boyle and Samuel Miller Boyle, and many special nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Sandra lived her life with authenticity and style, marching to the beat of her own drum. She was born in Ashe County, North Carolina to William Reese Grubb Sr. (1895-1952) and Annie Louise Grubb (Stephens) (1903-1994). The youngest of nine children, she was affectionately known as Sonny for her sunny personality. She graduated from Beaver Creek High School in 1962 and married Romulus Zachary "Zack" Miller in 1963. They were married until 1985 and welcomed two daughters, Stephanie and Jennifer. Her beloved brothers and sisters passed away before her, and they are now reunited in eternal life: Burl Melvin Grubb (Virginia); Ervin William Grubb (Betty); Glenn Vernon Grubb (Minnie); Laila "Jeanette" Walker (Oliver "Oz"); Essie Faye Thomas (Percy); Arnold "Bryce" Grubb (Maglene); Thomas Alexander Grubb (Rita); and William Reece Grubb Jr. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Maglene Grubb and Rita Grubb.

Sandra continued her education in her adult life, completing night classes while working full-time to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1986. She was committed to social justice, helping others through her career with the Social Security Administration Office of Hearings and Appeals. A highlight of her career was a special work detail in Rhode Island, for which she was recognized as Rhode Island's Federal Employee of the Year in 1999. After achieving many professional milestones, Sandra retired in 2006. She then directed her energy to volunteer work, serving as a guardian ad litem and a Stephen Minister, as well as devoting her time to Urban Ministry, AmeriCorps, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Greensboro Science Center. She was a fine person with a generous heart, a sharp sense of humor and a true appreciation of art, poetry and her beloved Leonard Cohen. Sandra will be dearly missed by all who knew her – she made her mark with her kindness, her concern for others and her devotion to her family.

Details for her celebration of life will follow.
