Jean Fieler Obituary

Stewart Jean Fair Fieler, 90, of Athens, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, after celebrating her 90th birthday earlier this month with family in Stewart, Ohio, and Morehead, Kentucky.

She was born August 10, 1935, in Morehead, Kentucky, to Linus and Jessie Mae Fair. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Bernard (Bernie) Fieler, in 1981; her parents; her siblings Ruth, Merl, Nell, Carl, and Dale; her mother-in-law Laura Fieler Biehl; her brother-in-law Dave Fieler; her sister-in-law Mary Fieler Sheppard; and her dear friend Sylvia Gilders.

She is survived by her children: Laura Fieler Carney of Stewart, Ohio; Therese Fieler Lackey (Keith) of Guysville, Ohio; and Karl Linus Fieler (Jenny) of Parkersburg, West Virginia and her grandchildren: Mackenzie Lackey Childers (Chris) of Saint Augustine, Florida; Kelsey Lackey Becker (John) of Hudsonville, Michigan; Levi Lackey (Jennifer) of Guysville, Ohio; Ryan Fieler Sikorski (Corey) of Parkersburg, West Virginia; Chase Fieler (Whitney) of Saga, Japan; Jake Fieler (Kaitlyn) of Parkersburg, West Virginia; and Max Carney of New York, New York. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Camryn and Asher Childers, Ethan and Andrew Becker, Ellis, Vaughn and Lachlan Lackey, Daxton, Kason and Sutton Fieler, and Frankie Fieler, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.

Jean was a retired Athens High School teacher, fondly remembered by former students who often shared with her children that she had been their favorite teacher or had made a lasting impact on their lives. During her husband's tenure as an English professor at Ohio University, Jean was active in many OU groups and deeply engaged in the Athens community.

She was a longtime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd and participated in several organizations including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Red Hat Society, the Athens Historical Society, and the League of Women Voters. While her children were in school, Jean was active in Band Boosters and Athletic Boosters, and regularly attended football, wrestling, basketball, baseball, and softball games, and band events. Once she became a grandmother, she continued that same enthusiastic support-cheering from the sidelines, applauding from the stands, and celebrating every performance and achievement of her grandchildren in their extracurricular activities. She found the greatest joy in simply being with those she loved most, her family.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of the 100 Hall at The Laurels of Athens.

Burial will take place at Lee Cemetery in Morehead, Kentucky, on Saturday, August 23, at 1:00 p.m., where Jean will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.

In honor of her lifelong love of reading, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Athens County Public Libraries, 30 Home Street, Athens, OH 45701. Jean Fieler

Brian and I are so sorry for your loss. We will always remember your Mother/ Grandmother with the prettiest smile. I first met her when she brought in a class to take the typing exams at Ohio University. What a gem! She was so kind and you could tell her students liked her. Later, it was so cool to wind up living in the same community. I am happy we knew her and share in your sorrow for your loss. May her legacy live on forever. Connie and Brian Garrett
