Alfred Evans Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

EVANS, Alfred, Jr. ALFRED LEWIS EVANS, JR. Alfred Lewis Evans, Jr., 80, died Saturday, April 25, 2009. He was a gifted attorney and a central member of the State Law Department of Georgia for forty-five years. As Senior Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Evans handled some of the most significant cases for the state during those years and appeared for oral argument before the United States Supreme Court several times. After growing up in New York, Mr. Evans attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1950, just in time to be drafted into the United States Army for the Korean Conflict. After two years of active duty in Korea, he insisted on being discharged in Asia where he traveled for the nine months before beginning law school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, which he simply called "The" after his graduation in 1956. The concept of honor exuded by the University of Virginia impacted him and his decisions for the rest of his life. In his early legal career, Mr. Evans worked with the United States Justice Department and then with the law firm of Powell, Goldstein, and Frasier in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1963, Governor Carl Sanders appointed him Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia and gave him the gift of a career which he loved so much that he sometimes expressed astonishment that he received a salary to pursue it. He loved the Law. Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Lewis Evans, Sr., and Myrtle Louise Sullivan. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Linda Davis Evans, his son, Alfred Lewis Evans, III, his daughter-in-law, Kelly Robinson Evans, and granddaughter, Anne Davis Evans, as well as his daughter, Maria-Louise Evans Coil, and his son-in-law, William Dane Coil. His only sibling, Ms. Marjorie Myrtle Evans, lives in Florida. Until his death, Mr. Evans was an active member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Lawyers' Foundation, the Lawyers' Club of Atlanta, and the Phoenix Society. After his honorable discharge from the United States Army, he served in the Air Force Reserve as Captain. He became a member of the Olde Guard at the College of William and Mary in 2000 and celebrated his 50th reunion at the University of Virginia School of Law in 2006. Mr. Evans was a proud charter member of the Atlanta Ski Club. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Monday, May 4, 2009, at H.M. Patterson and Son - Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Mr. Evans was a communicant at Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church, 805 Mt. Vernon Hwy., Sandy Springs, GA 30327, where there will be a memorial service Tuesday morning, May 5, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. followed by a reception in the Inglett Room. There will be a private interment in Savannah at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Hampden-Sydney College Memorial Annual Scholarship Fund, Hampden-Sydney College, P.O. Box 637, Hampden-Sydney, Virginia 23943.
