Alice Wiley Obituary

WILEY, Alice Rebekah Alice Rebekah Wiley, 26, died on December 27, 2013, in Kennesaw, Georgia. She was a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and was in the process of applying to law school. Her career goals grew out of her deep desire to make a difference in the lives of those in need, and her strong belief in social justice. Academically gifted, Alice graduated from a home education program in 2005. Her senior year she was an intern at the Georgia Senate. During high school, she sang with the Columbus Civic Chorale, volunteered at a children's summer camp, and served as a church pianist. She rounded out her senior year with an outstanding piano recital that included a stunning original composition for piano, flute and violin. Alice received an academic scholarship to Mercer University in 2005, and graduated cum laude in 2009 with a BA in Theatre. Alice was a Watson Brown Scholar, and was also awarded the W. G. Lee Theatre Award and Scholarship; she was named the Outstanding Junior in Theatre in 2008, and was a member of the Mercer Players. She acted in seven productions, composed the soundtrack for one of them, and was playwright for two plays. Her senior year the Mercer Players performed her full length play titled, Graduation Story. Alice was also a gifted artist and writer; she loved drawing and sketching, and wrote fiction and poetry. She leaves behind a manuscript with her own illustrations. In spite of the gifts and talents she possessed, her life was complicated by the grief that she internalized following the death of her father, the Rev. Phillip Wiley, in 2001. Only fourteen at that time, she assumed responsibilities that gave her a maturity beyond her years. This also began her twelve year battle with depression. In 2012, she began volunteering as a clinical research interviewer with the Grady Trauma Project at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. She found deep personal satisfaction in the research in PTSD, due to its effect on her family after the death of her father. Her work with the Grady Project influenced her decision to pursue counseling and social work as a career. Surviving relatives include her mother, Susan Wiley; sisters Helen Wiley, Kendra Wiley, and Anna Wiley; sister Mary Kathryn Wiley and brother-in-law Sean Bewick; brother Thomas Wiley, sister-in-law Carrie, and nephews Eamon and Malcolm; grandfather Fred Wiley; and grandmother Martha Taylor. Numerous relatives, friends and colleagues are also deeply mourning her loss. Alice was buried in Hamilton, Georgia, on New Year's Day. A memorial service was held January 4, 2014, at the Springer Opera House in Columbus, Georgia. A scholarship in her memory has been established at The Springer Theatre Academy, Columbus, Georgia.

Remembering you this evening, and missing you so very much. May light eternal shine upon you. May God our Father hold you close to His heart, wiping away all of your tears and healing your griefs and sorrows. May you find your rest in Him, and may you be used for His Kingdom's sake, which was your desire for so much of your life. We need your prayers, sweet Alice. Along with your Daddy, Gary, Ron, and so many others who are part of the heavenly crowd of witnesses, watching us run this earthly race, pray for us. I pray for you.

May 18, 2015 you would have graduated from U Penn with your Master of Social Policy degree. Your classmates remembered you in the program. As Gary said so often, "you are loved and special" and we miss you so much.

It saddens me that I didn't get to know you better at Mercer as it appears you had so much to offer the world. I'll always remember your friendly smile in class and in passing by. Rest well, Alice. May the peace and mercy of God be with your family and friends.

I wish I had had the opportunity to know Alice more deeply as an adult. My memories are of her early to mid-teen years, and after that, I knew her mainly through Facebook, some musical pieces I found online and listened to, and her mother's letters. Three special memories come to mind. The first was sitting in her father's church one night, listening to her play a piano composition with such authority and passion, I was stunned to silence (extremely unusual for me). She was a little unnerved by my lack of babbling, and pressed me for a response. I struggled to find words to express the power and beauty in her playing, and how deeply it had moved me, which reassured her a bit. The other memories are related to our shared love of JRR Tolkien's LORD of the RINGS, and the movies. One summer, we were back in Georgia for a week, and she, her sibs, and our children adapted a camp game "King Frog" to be played with LOTR characters and representative motions, rather than with animal ones. I can still see her eyes aglow in a laughing face as she focused on the game and the other players' antics. The last mental image I have of her is my own imagining. I never saw a picture of her, but I heard that she and Mary Kathryn made elven cloaks to wear to a marathon showing of the movie trilogy when RETURN of the KING came out. I could "see" her radiance glowing through the shadows cast by the hooded cloak, and imagine her grace and strength helping hobbits on their quest! In many ways, I associate her with LOTR's Eowyn--valiant, beautiful, yearning to make a difference in the battle against evil, and dreadfully wounded in it. My hope and prayer is that she is now safely within the Houses of Healing, under the expert and gentle care of the true King, who is restoring her soul. Like Eowyn, she is truly a "noble and captivating one," as the meaning of her names, "Alice Rebekah," suggests. Mae govannen, beautiful one.

May you have rest eternal, sweet Alice, in the arms of God. May you enjoy the presence of your Daddy and Gary. May all of your wounds be healed, and your sorrows forgotten. May the halls of heaven be filled with your music and singing. And may you ever dance for joy. You are deeply missed and loved.
