Andrew SWOPE Obituary

SWOPE, Andrew J. "Drew" Andrew J. Swope ("Drew"), age 32, passed away on October 15, 2017 at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born February 6, 1985 in Philadelphia, PA, to Debbie Sharie Swope and Jack Custis Swope. A 2007 graduate of Furman University, he earned a masters degree in City and Regional Planning at Georgia Tech, and was devoted to developing affordable housing in Atlanta and throughout the South. He married Amelia Cornish October 8, 2016, and they celebrated their marriage with family and friends in Winter Harbor, Maine, on June 17, 2017. Inquisitive, engaging and loving, Drew was known for his passion, exuberance and spontaneity in life. He is survived by his wife, Amelia; brother, Michael; sister, Lauren; his parents, and many other family and friends, who are deeply grieved by his passing, but comforted in the knowledge that he is at peace with the Lord. Family and friends are invited to gather at 2 p.m., Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Honey Creek Woodlands at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Drew Swope Memorial Fund can be made at swopedreams.com, which will further the cause of affordable housing and community development in Atlanta.

I spent time with Drew when he moved to NYC about 10 years ago and was spending all of his energy trying to find a way to help homeless people survive while they were living on the street. He knew that I'd always been involved in non-profit endeavors and so we sat and talked and I shared with him my experience. we hugged the last time I saw him. He was so very passionate and selfless. I have not spent any time with him recently but am not surprised to find out that he still was trying to make a difference. My heart goes out to his wife and his family and all of us who lose the ones we love so much. God Bless Drew, with love, cousin Wendy Swope Wells-Finn

My sincerest condolences to Amelia and the Swope family. I was fortunate enough to have met Drew through a mutual friend, and although the time we spent together was limited, I will remember Drew for his infectious personality, positive energy, passion for life, and genuine character.

God Bless.

I was shocked and heartbroken to learn of Drew's passing today. Drew was really one of a kind. He was a good friend to me at Furman and is in many of my favorite college memories. I remember him as someone who could change your mood or the direction of your day because he was so happy and kind and thoughtful. I haven't spoken to him in a while, but I'd like to believe his life was happy and full because that's just the kind of person he was. To his family, I'm just so sorry. I'll be thinking of you all.

Drew was a bright light at The Benoit Group. His passion for developing affordable housing was infectious. He reminded us daily of the important values of life. He will leave a huge void in our personal and professional lives. I often thought I was teaching and guiding Drew but in hindsight, he was teaching and reminding me of all the important things in life by his humanity and humility. I will miss Drew tremendously! My heart is broken but in no comparison to his wife and family who he spoke of often. My condolences to his wife, Amelia, and the entire Swope family! I pray for peace and understanding during this most tragic time.
